PUZZLE

solve the following puzzle

ORDER OF OPERATIONS ( BEDMAS)

You can perform multiplication

and division together.
You can perform subtraction
and addition together.
Puzzle

1 + 10 x 2 = 10 x 2 + 1
= 20 + 1
= 21

According to the law of operations you should

multiply then add.
2 x 10 + 1 =
2 x 10 = 20
20 + 1 = 21 ( correct way)

2 x 10 + 1
10 + 1 = 11
11 x 2 = 22
Key Terms
Definition of key terms

● Constants are numbers that stand alone . For examples, 4, -8, - 10

● Variable is a symbol or letter such as x and y that represent an unknown value.
● Operator- A symbol indicating what operation must be done. For examples, +, -,
× and ÷
● Coefficient is a number which multiplies a variable, For example, another way to
write 5p is 5 × p and in this example 5 is the coefficient and p is the variable.
Definition of key terms

● A term is a single mathematical expression, a term can be single variable, (a

letter), several variables multiplied but never added or subtracted. For examples,
2x, x and 8.
● An expression is one or a group of terms that may include variables, constants
and operators and it does not include an equal sign. For examples: 2x, 3p + m,
2( m + 3) and 5p + 6p – 4
Definition of key terms

⮚ An equation is a mathematical statement containing an equal sign. For

examples: 2x = 20, 3p + m = 30, 2( m + 3) = 100, 5p + 6p – 4= 40
Algebra

● Using the expression below and correctly match each answer with the
corresponding mathematical vocabulary.

Expression- 3p + c – 6d+ 4 + 8

Constants p, c and d
Variables 4 and 8

Coefficients - and +

3, 1 and - 6

Algebra

1) What is the difference between an equation and expression ?

Equation consist of an equal sign and expression does not consist of an equal
sign.
2) What is a variable? A symbol or letter that represents an unknown quantity or
number.
3) How many variables are in 2x + m + 6 – g? 3 variables and they are x, m and
g.
4) What is another way of saying 4 times m? 4m

5) What is another way of saying 3 times r? 3r
