Week 4 - Peripheral Devices
Week 4 - Peripheral Devices
W4 Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students should be
able to:
What is peripheral devices
What are the different peripheral devices
TOPIC
What is
PERIPHERAL DEVICES
A peripheral device, also known as an auxiliary device (External Devices), is any hardware
device that is connected to a computer or other digital device but does not contribute to the
computer's primary function, such as computing. Peripheral devices are used to input, output, or
store data.
TOPIC
INPUT DEVICES
Allow users to input data into the computer.

TOPIC
Input devices can be classified into different categories based on how they input data into the
computer. Some of the most common categories are:
• Mechanical input devices: Mechanical input devices use physical movements to input data into
the computer. Examples of mechanical input devices include keyboards, mice, and touchpads.
• Optical input devices: Optical input devices use light to input data into the computer. Examples
of optical input devices include scanners and webcams.
• Electrical input devices: Electrical input devices use electrical signals to input data into the
computer. Examples of electrical input devices include microphones and barcode readers.
TOPIC
OUTPUT DEVICES
Allow users to see or hear data from the computer.

TOPIC
INPUT/OUTPUT DEVICES
Some devices provide both input and output functionality. This includes devices such as fax
devices, external storage devices, and touchscreen devices.

• Expand the capabilities of the computer: Peripherals can expand the capabilities of a computer by allowing it to do
things that it would not be able to do on its own. For example, a scanner can be used to scan documents into the
computer, and a printer can be used to print documents from the computer.
• Make the computer more user-friendly: Peripherals can make the computer more user-friendly by providing
alternative ways to interact with it. For example, a mouse can be used to control the cursor on the screen, and a
keyboard can be used to enter text.
• Store data: Peripherals can be used to store data on the computer. This can be useful for backing up data or for storing
files that you do not need to access frequently.
• Connect to other devices: Peripherals can be used to connect the computer to other devices, such as a printer or a
scanner. This can be useful for sharing data or for printing documents.
