Math 6 Week 9 Day 2

The document covers learning objectives about adding integers, including rules for adding integers where if the signs are the same you add the absolute values and if the signs are different you minus the absolute values. It provides examples of adding integers on a number line, such as representing positive integers as blue tiles and negative integers as red tiles. Students are given an independent practice of adding integers and asked to summarize the general rules for adding integers.

Week 9 Day 2

Learning Objectives:
Performs addition on integers.
M6NS-IIi-156
● Which of the two integers in each pair
has a greater distance from zero?
1.+5 & -4
2.-2 & -9
3.-10 & -6
4.+7 & -3
5.-12 & + 1
Motivation
Before we turn on our attention to integers, I want to check first your vocabulary.
All you have to do is to give the synonyms or antonyms of the following words.
Vocabulary Synonyms Antonyms
Above Over, higher, top Below, under,
beneath, down
Earn Gain, get, merit, make Loss, forfeit, mislay
Negative Minus, reverse, Positive, plus, good,
depreciating favorable
increase Add to, growth, raise, Decrease, lessen,
expand reduce
Combined Merge, blend, join Separate, detached,
part
Modelling (I do)
1.How are we going to combine the gain and
loss?
2.What is the total sale of fruits of Mrs. Reyes?
3.How can we determine if Mrs. Reyes gained
or lost money from selling her fruits?
Do you go the
market? Or
supermarket?
Presentation
Addition is the same as “combining”.
How do we combine integers?
Shown below are the tiles colored blue
and red. Let the blue tiles represent
positive integers, while the red tiles
represent negative integers.
Note: Absolute Value – it is a numerical value
without taking the sign into consideration
In using the number line for adding integers:
 Always start at zero
 Add a positive integer by moving to the right
on the number line
 Add a negative integer by moving to the left
on the number line.
Rules for Adding Integers
To get the number:
If the signs are the same, add the absolute values.
If the signs are different, minus the absolute values.
To get the sign:
Adding 2 positive integers will always give a positive answer.
Adding 2 negative integers will always give a negative answer.
Adding 2 integers with different signs, take the sign from the
integer with the larger absolute value (the number without
the sign)
Independent Practice (You do)
Find the sum of the following using
number line.

1.-2 + 3 = _____
2.3 + (-5) = ________
3.– 4 + (-1) = _______
GENERALIZATION:
What are the rules in
adding integers?

Assignment
Add the following expression
1. 45 + (-12)
2. (-10) + 5
3. 45 + (-16)
4. 20 + (-18) + 87
5. 10 + (-45) + 10
