FIELD TRIPS
FIELD TRIPS
• Any learning activity that is carried outside the class
room by children is called a field trip.
• It can also be called an excursion or a school journey.
• The field trip provides the children with first hand
experiences with materials, science and its
applications.
• Places that can be visited with profitable results vary
in time and distance.
• These can be local factories, gardens, farms, hospital,
sewage disposal plants, water purification tanks etc.
Ways of using a field trip
i. Introducing a unit.
• The field trip is effective when the children have little or
no background in the topic to be learnt.
• The main purpose in this case is to arouse interest in the
topic.
ii. Obtaining information during the unit.
• In the middle of the topic, sufficient questions or problems
might have been raised, therefore, by taking a field trip,
the children can use it to find answers to their questions.
iii. When used at the end of the unit, the field trip is an
excellent technique for summarising the highlights of the
topic learnt.
Why carry out field trips?
• They motivate pupils to learn science and stimulate their
interests.
• Pupils get an opportunity to collect materials for the science
corner or school museum.
• Science facts and principals become more realistic to pupils.
• Pupils establish the relationship between what is learnt in
class with real life situations.
• Pupils learn to respect science.
• Pupils learn to co-operate among themselves and also with
the members of the community – team spirit is encouraged.
• Pupils learn to think critically and apply elements of
scientific method of problem solving.
Criteria for a good field trip.
• The field trip must be planned and the visit must be purposeful.
• The teacher must communicate with the parents of the pupils to be
involved in the field trip.
• He has to communicate in writing school authorities of the field trip.
• The teacher must remember to involve pupils in the planning of the
trip.
• The field trip must not be taken as a holiday trip.
• The teacher has to prepare a guide sheet, details of which can vary
with the type of the trip.
• Pupils should be involved in the preparation of the guide sheet.
• Guide sheet should cover the following: route, transport, dress,
provision for meals, fist aid kit, accommodation, apparatus where
necessary, exercise books, data records, pens etc.
• Pupils to be grouped and each group to be given a responsibility
