Feed Water System

The purpose of the Feedwater System is to provide an adequate flow of properly heated and conditioned water to the
boiler and maintain boiler drum level compatible with the boiler load. This system also conveys water to the boiler reheater
attemperators, superheater attemperators, auxiliary steam desuperheaters, the high pressure bypass desuperheater and
HP fill & purge SGCW pump cooler. Feedwater is heated to achieve an efficient thermodynamic cycle.

Under normal operating conditions, feedwater flows from the outlet nozzles of the Deaerator storage tank, through the
boiler feed booster pumps (BFBP), to the boiler feed pumps (BFP). From the discharge of the boiler feed pumps, the
flow continues through both high pressure feedwater heater strings to the boiler economiser inlets.

Deaerator

● Working Principle
Henry’s Law
Henry’s law is a gas law which state when temperature is kept constant.

P ∝ C (or) P = kH.C

Decrease the partial pressure of the dissolved gas

by adding steam in Deaerator, gas solubility decreases.

When the temperature of water is growing, the dissolved

oxygen content within the water is decreases.

Purpose & Type of BFP

• The boiler feed pump (BFP) is one of the most important auxiliary equipment in coal-fired power plants.

• Boiler Feed Pump is used to pump feed water into a steam boiler.

• There are 3 BFP’s in 500MW unit. (2 TDBFPs & 1 MDBFP).

• MDBFP is generally used during unit start up or shut down, low load operation of the Unit or emergency

situations

• During the normal operation both TDBFPs remain in service and MDBFP remains as Standby on Auto.
Components of BFP

Booster Pump

•To prevent cavitation booster pump provides positive

pressure at the pump suction.

Hydraulic coupling

• To Transmit power from motor to pump as per the load

requirement.

Suction Strainers

• To Protect Booster pump and main pump against

catastrophic failure due to entry of coarse particles
Dosing in Feed water and Recirculation

Recirculation

• To maintain the Continuous flow of feed

water when the valve to Economizer is
Closed

Dosing

• Ammonia and Hydrazine dosing done at BFP

Suction as to maintain pH level of feed water.
HP Heaters

▪ Regenerative heat exchangers.

▪ Counter flow type.
▪ Tube material: carbon steel, stainless
steel & monel metal
▪ Preheat feed water at high pressure by
extracted steam from IPT.
▪ Efficiency improvement
HP heater

Group bypass scheme

● Taking HPHs out of survive in pair.

● To avoid mixing of high pressure of feed water into low pressure steamin
case of tube rupture.
Feed regulating station

▪ a multiple feed-water regulating valve

arrangemen.
▪ to ensure continuous and adequate supply
of feed water to drum.
▪ Different capacity lines
▪ 3 element feed control.
