This document discusses the different types of computers based on their size, speed, storage capacity, and cost. It identifies four main types: microcomputers, which include desktops, laptops, and handheld devices; minicomputers, which are bigger than micros and can support multiple users; mainframe computers, which are very large and powerful systems that can support hundreds of users simultaneously; and supercomputers, which are the most powerful computers used for advanced tasks like weather forecasting and military research.

Types of
Computer
Those are COMPUTERS
COMPUTER?

It has the ability to accept data (input), process it, and then
produce outputs.
Let’s learn….
•Types of computer
1) Micro computer
2) Mini computer
3) Mainframe computer
4) Super computer
Types of Computer
There are different types of computer with respect
to size, speed, storage capacity and cost, computers
can be classified in the following types:

1) Micro computer

2) Mini computer

3) Mainframe computer

4) Super computer
Types of Computer
1. Micro computer
a) Desktop computer
b) Laptop computer
c) Handheld computer
2. Mini computer
3. Mainframe computer
4. Super computer
1. Micro Computers
• Are small and costs less. Designed for personal use
therefore called personal computer
• RELIES ON MICROPROCESSOR

• Mainly used in homes, schools, offices, shops,

banks etc. Example: commodore 64, IBM PC
• Given different names as per use types are;

a) Desktop computers
b) Laptop computers

c) Handheld computers
a) Desktop Computers
• These computers can easily be accommodated
on the top of a desk due to their small size.
• Hence they are called Desktop Computers
b) Laptop Computers
• These computer are small in size and can be
placed on the lap
• These are battery operated computers and can
be carried in briefcase and used anywhere
while travelling
c) Handheld

Computers
These are the smallest computers called PDAs
• They lack the power of desktop or laptop
computers but offer features for users who
need limited functions and small size
2. Mini computer
• Bigger in size than micro computers
• Also called mid-range server, meaning it
can cater to multiple users
• Have higher processing speed and costlier

• Several users can use it at the same time

• Used in banks, universities and big

organizations
PDP-‐8, a mini-‐computer
3. Mainframe computer
• Very powerful, big in size with large memory and
high speed
• Designed to tackle huge amount of data

• More than hundreds users can use it at the same

time
• Very expensive , used for large organizations,
universities, banks, scientific laboratories, airline/
railway ticket reservation, state exchange
markets, etc.
Main-‐frame computer
4. Super computer
• Most powerful computers with huge speed

• Used for weather forecasting, space research,

satellite control, military research, etc.
• Example: CRAY-‐1, CRAY-‐2, PARAM, ETA,
Sunway TaihuLight, etc.
