What is a Team?

A team is defined as a group of


people who perform
interdependent tasks to work
toward accomplishing a common
mission or specific objective.
How is a team built?
There are 4 stages involved in building a team, namely :

1. Forming –
Initial stage of team building
wherein there might be
confusion and lack of clarity
about the tasks to be achieved.
2. Storming –
Conflicts may arise between

team members in this stage as

they begin to set up

communication.
3. Norming –

Open communication is

established and the team

members are well oriented

towards the task at hand.


4. Performing –

The team focuses all of its

attention on achieving the

goals. The team is resourceful

and effective.
What is a healthcare team?
A Health care team comprises of 2 or more health care professionals working in a

coordinated, complementary and agreed-upon manner.

The aim of such a team is to provide quality, cost-effective and evidence-based care to a

patient.

What is an effective team?


An effective team is one where the team members, including the patients,
communicate with each other.
Communication is necessary to ensure that every individual observation and expertise is taken
into account to optimize patients’ care.

What are the benefits of building a team?

• Teamwork makes performing tasks organized so that services are better


accessible to patients.
• There is improved coordination which results in efficient use of health care
services and improved patient care.
• This results in an improved satisfaction of patients and more compliance towards
further treatment.
• Increased compliance results in overall improved health outcomes.
• All of these factors results in enhanced job satisfaction for the treating
physician.
What are the challenges to effective teamwork
in a healthcare setup?
• Changes in either the roles played by the team members or the setting in which they function
may result in problems with acknowledgement, role allocation which may decrease the efficiency
of the team setup.
• Since the healthcare setup is highly hierarchical, the ability to resolve conflict or disagreement
in the team is crucial to successful teamwork.
• In case the teamwork fails to function effectively, it can lead to accidents which could be due
to :
i. unclear definition of roles
ii. lack of explicit coordination
iii. miscommunication.
