OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, the students

must be able to:
a.define a circle;
b.determine the standard equation of a
circle; and
c.graph a circle in a rectangular
coordinate system
CIRCLE
•A circle is a set of points given
distance from one point called
the center.
•The distance from the center is
called the radius.
CIRCLE
•A Circle is a set of points in the xy plane
that are a fixed distance r from a fixed
point (h,k), where (h,k) is the center of
the circle and r is the radius.
Equations of Circles
• Suppose the radius is r and the center is (h,
k). Let (x, y) be any point on the circle.

• The distance between (x, y) and (h, k) is r,

so you can use the Distance Formula.
r= 2 2
( x2  x1 )  ( y2  y1 )

2 2
( x  h)  ( y  k )  r
Equations of Circles
2 2
( x  h)  ( y  k )  r
EXAMPLES:

•Write the standard equation of the circle

with a center at (-4, 0) and radius 7.

(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2 Standard equation of a circle.

[(x – (-4)]2 + (y – 0)2 = 7 Substitute values.
(x + 4)2 + (y – 0)2 = 49 Simplify.
Example:

• Write the standard equation of a circle with a

center at ( -5,0) and radius 4.8.

 x  h 2
 2 y  k   r2
2 2

x   5   y  0   4.8
2

x   5 2
  y  0   4.8
2 2

 x  5 2
2 y  23.04
2

 x  5
2
 y  23.04
EXAMPLES:
• The point (1, 2) is on a circle whose center is (5, -
1). Write a standard equation of the circle.

r= ( x2  x1 ) 2  ( y2  y1 ) 2 Use the Distance Formula

r= (5  1) 2  (1  2) 2 Substitute values.

r= (4) 2  (3) 2 Simplify.

r= 16  9 Simplify.
r= 25 Addition Property
r=5 Square root the result.
EXAMPLES:
• The point (1, 2) is on a circle whose center is (5, -1).
Write a standard equation of the circle.
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2 Standard equation of a circle.

[(x – 5)]2 + [y –(-1)]2 = 52 Substitute values.

(x - 5)2 + (y + 1)2 = 25 Simplify.

(x – 4)2 + (y + 3)2 = 20
EXAMPLES:

• Write an equation of the circle, in standard

form, centered at the origin and with the
radius equal to 5.

• (x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2
• (x – 0)2 + (y – 0)2 = 52
• x2 + y2 = 25
