IoT Presentation

This document discusses Internet of Things (IoT). It defines IoT as the network of physical devices embedded with electronics, software, and sensors that can connect and exchange data. It describes how IoT creates opportunities to integrate the physical world into computer systems, improving efficiency and reducing human effort. The key building blocks of IoT are outlined as end devices/nodes, gateways, connectivity networks, and cloud-based applications and storage. Common applications of IoT discussed include smart agriculture, smart homes, health, traffic, retail, and smart cities. Challenges and the need for further research in areas like urban traffic and public safety are also summarized.

Internet of Things (IoT)

Dr. G N Kodanda Ramaiah, Ph.D

Dean R&D, Professor & Head ECE
Kuppam Engineering College, Kuppam
What is IoT?
• The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical devices,
vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics,
software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these
things to connect and exchange data.

• It creates opportunities for more direct integration of the physical

world into computer-based systems, resulting in efficiency
improvements, economic benefits, and reduced human exertions.
Evolution of IoT
Building blocks of IoT

• End Devices / Nodes (Smart Things)

• Gateways / Local Processing Nodes

• Connectivity

• Cloud Based Application and Storage

• Smart Things / End Devices / Nodes
– Sensors
– Communication Device

– Actuators
– Controlling Unit
• Gateways / Local Processing Unit
– Middleware

– IoT Readers
– Signal Receivers

– Transceivers
• Network (Connectivity)
– WiFi

– Blue Tooth
– ZigBee

– LoRa
• Cloud based IoT Application and Storage

– Smart City
Layers of IoT
Applications of IoT
IoT in Agriculture
1. Environmental Factor
• Temperature
• Humidity
• Light Intensity
• Rain fall
• CO2 gas
• Soil Factors
• Soil Temperature
• PH Value
• Moisture Content
• Micro & Macro Nutrients

• Control Mechanism(Polyhou
• Cooling Fan---Temp
• Foggers-----Humidity
• Shaders ----Light
• CO2 Generation---Low
• Motor----Watering

Challenges of IoT
• Object Naming

• Data Conversion

• Privacy

• Interoperability

• Security

• Quality of Service

• Data Encryption and Key Management

• Network Issues (Traffic Congestion)

Research Need and Scope
• Urban traffic related
– Congestion due to increase in vehicles
• Creates poor traffic flow
• Increases fuel consumption
– Pollution
– Creates a negative experience altogether

• Parking problem
– People looking for parking creates additional traffic congestion
– Limited parking places
• Waste of time and fuel to find a parking
– Loss of revenue and local business
Research Need and Scope
• Public safety
– Remote monitoring of public attractions, homes, other places
– Place with poor records become unattractive for citizens &
businesses
• In turn it slows the growth

• City lighting
– Problem with maintenance
• Physical inspection
– Lights are not intelligently operated
• Intensity remains the same throughout the night
Research Direction…. (Simple Projects)

• Smart Whether Monitoring

• Smart Water Tank Monitoring
• Smart Baby Monitoring
• Smart Attendance
• Smart Parking
• Smart Health
• Smart Home (Controlling Appliances)
