Set- up Computer Server
Objective:
1. Set-up user Access
2. Configure network services
3. Perform testing, documentation and
pre-deployment procedures
LO 1:
SET-UP USER ACCESS
NETWORK OPERATING
SYSTEM
A network operating system (NOS) is a computer operating
system (OS) that's designed primarily to support workstations,
PCs and, in some instances, older terminals that are connected
on a local area network (LAN). The software behind a NOS
enables multiple devices within a network to communicate and
share resources with each other.
Server
is a computer or a system that is designed to provide various services, resources, or
functionalities to other computers, devices, or users, typically over a network.
Servers are an integral part of the infrastructure that enables communication, data
sharing, and the functioning of various applications and services on the internet and
within local networks.
10 Common types of server
Common types of Server
1. Web Server

These servers host websites and web applications. They

respond to requests from web browsers by delivering web
pages, images, and other content to users over the internet.
Common types of Server
2. File Server

A file server stores and manages files and allows users or

clients to access and share these files over a network. It's
commonly used in offices to facilitate file sharing and
centralized storage.
Common types of Server
3. Database Server

These servers manage and store databases. They handle

queries, data storage, and retrieval for applications that rely
on databases for data management.
Common types of Server
4. Application Server

An application server hosts and manages software

applications and services that are used by clients or users. It
handles the processing of application logic and often
communicates with databases or other services.
Common types of Server
5. Mail Server

Mail servers manage email communication. They send,

receive, store, and deliver email messages to clients like email
clients or webmail interfaces
Common types of Server
6. Game Server

Game servers host multiplayer online games, enabling players

to connect, interact, and play together in virtual environments.
Common types of Server
7. DNS Server

Domain Name System (DNS) servers translate human-readable

domain names (like www.example.com) into IP addresses,
allowing computers to locate resources on the internet.
Common types of Server
8. Proxy Server

Proxy servers act as intermediaries between clients and other

servers. They can be used for various purposes, such as
improving security, caching content, or filtering internet traffic.
Common types of Server
9. Print Server

Print servers manage and coordinate print jobs from multiple

users on a network to one or more printers.
Common types of Server
10. FTP Server

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) servers facilitate the transfer of

files between clients and servers, often used for uploading and
downloading files
TYPES OF NETWORK OPERATING

SYSTEM
1. Peer to Peer network

2. Client- server network

Peer to peer network
In a peer-to-peer network operating system users are allowed
to share resources and files located on their computers and
access shared resources from others. This system is not based
with having a file server or centralized management source. A
peer-to-peer network sets all connected computers equal;
they all share the same abilities to use resources available on
the network.
Components of Peer to Peer Network Design
1. Internet Service Provider (ISP)
an organization that provides services for accessing,
using, or participating in
the Internet. ISP can be organized in various forms, such
as commercial,
community-owned, non-profit, or otherwise privately
owned

2. Network cable
use to connect one network device to other network
devices or to connect
two or more computers to share files and printer.

3. Modem
a device that converts data into a format suitable for a transmission
medium so that it can be transmitted from one computer to another. A
modem modulates one or more carrier wave signals to encode digital
information for
transmission and demodulates signals to decode the transmitted
information.

4. Router
a device that forwards data packets between computer networks. It
performs
the traffic directing functions on the internet. Data sent through the
internet, such
as a web page or email, is in the form of data packets.

5. Personal computer (PC)
a multi-purpose computer whose size, capabilities, and price make it
Feasible for individual use.
Personal computers are intended to be operated directly by an end
user.

a peripheral device which makes a persistent representation
of graphics or text, usually on paper.

Cable routes of peer to peer network design
1. The source of the internet is from the Internet Service
Provider (ISP).
2. Next the network cable connects to the modem’s network
port.
3. Then two network cables attach to the router’s network
port.
4. Next the network cable connects to the personal computers
(PCs).
5. Lastly, the PC1 shares the printer to the network.
The advantages include:
 Ease of setup
 Less hardware needed, no server need
be acquired

The disadvantages include:

 No central location for storage
 Less security than the client–server
model
ACTIVITY
Direction: Draw a cable routes of peer to peer network design, using the
following
Procedures:
1. The source of the internet is from the Internet Service
Provider (ISP).
2. Next the network cable connects to the modem’s
network port.
3. Then three network cables attach to the router’s
network port.
4. Next the network cable connects to the personal
computers (PCs).
5. Lastly, the PC2 shares the printer to the network.

Configure Peer to Peer Network
(Basic File Sharing)
Job sheet 1.1
Configure Peer to Peer Network
(Basic File Sharing)
Procedure:
Step 1: Create File - Create a file/folder on the desktop. Navigate to it via file explorer.
Step 2: Advanced Sharing - Right-click on the file, select properties. Click over to the "Sharing"
tab and select advanced sharing. Check the box marked "Share this folder".
Step 3: Permissions - Select which permissions you want other users to have for this file. You will
retain full access, but others will have either read-only, edit, or executable permissions,
depending on what you select.
Step 4: Open Sharing - Go to control panel, select network & internet, then select network &
sharing center. Go to Advanced sharing settings. Scroll down, and select "Turn on sharing so
anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders" and "Turn off
password protected sharing".
Step 5: Note Ensure that you can connect to the other PC. Ping each other to see if you are both
connected to the same server.
Step 6: Accessing the File - On the 2nd PC, open file explorer. Go to network. Your file should be
there.
