Computer Hardware & Software

Hardware Software
All types of computers consist
of two basic parts:
1. Software is a set of instructions or
programs that tells the hardware on what to
do.
2. Hardware is any part of your
computer that has a physical
structure.
There are several types of Software:
1. SYSTEM SOFTWARE is an operating system designed
to operate and control the computer hardware and to provide a
platform for running application.
a) Operating System (OS) is a collection of software that manages
computer hardware resources and provides common services for
computer programs.
Examples: Windows (Microsoft), MacOS (Apple), Ubuntu (Linux), Android
(Google) and iOS (Apple).
Examples of Operating System:
b) Utility Software is a program that performs
maintenance task for the computer. Examples:
Application Launchers, Compression Utilities, Disk
Defragmenters, Registry Cleaners, Virus Scanners,
Screensavers, etc.
c) Device Driver is a program that allows a
particular hardware device to work &
communicate with the computer system.
Examples: Printer driver, Webcam driver, Video card
driver, Sound card driver, etc.
2. APPLICATION SOFTWARE is a software that causes
a computer to perform useful tasks.

Examples of Application Software:

COMPUTER HARDWARE
1.CPU (Central Processing Unit), the brain of the
computer. It is contained inside a small chip
called the microprocessor. The CPU processes
all the basic & complex instructions given to it.
2. MOTHERBOARD is the main base of the
computer hardware system. All parts, components
and devices connect to the motherboard.
3. Memory is where data and programs are
placed for execution by the CPU.
2 KINDS OF MEMORY
1. RAM (Random Access Memory)
is a Volatile type of storage or Temporary
Storage (short-term storage). The information
in the RAM are lost when power is turned off.
2. ROM(Read Only Memory)
is a type of non-volatile memory used in
computers. ROM information cannot be
changed even when power is off.
4. Hard disk (also called HDD, Hard
Disk Drive). It contains the
operating system of the
computer, software application
and all files.
5. Floppy Disk drive is a device that reads
or writes data on a floppy disk or diskette.
6. OPTICAL Drive is a device that reads
or writes data, or both, on a CD-ROM or
DVD-ROM.
7. Video Card is a computer component whose
main function is to generate video and
images to a display such as the monitor.
8. Sound card is a peripheral device that attaches
to the PCI slot on a motherboard to enable the
computer to input, process, and deliver sound.
9. LAN(Local Area Network) card or Network
card is an expansion card that enables you
to connect two or more computers in a
network.
10. Modem (Modulator-Demodulator) is a
communication device that allows the
computer to receive and send data.

modem) modem)
11. Power Supply- the CPU, motherboard,
hard disk and other components inside the
system unit get their power source from
the power supply.
12. CMOS (Complimentary Metal-Oxide
Semiconductor)
It stores the date, calendar, current time and
password of the computer. It is powered by batteries
so that even when the computer is off information
inside it remains.
13. System Unit (also called System box,
case or tower) contains some of the
most important pieces of hardware of a
computer.

14. Mouse is a pointing device used to
choose and open programs and data
files.

15. Keyboard is used to type data into
the computer. It is one way of
telling the computer on what to do.
16. Monitor is a visual display device
to present output information in the
form of text, graphics or video on the
screen.
3 KINDS OF MONITOR
1. CRT (Cathode Ray tube) is basically a vacuum
tube with an electron gun and a fluorescent screen.
It is the oldest type of monitor.

2. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is a kind
of monitor that is thin and flat, with low
power and low radiation and less space
occupied.

3. LED (Light Emitting Diode)
A display and lighting technology used in almost every electrical and
electronic product on the market, from a tiny on/off light to digital
readouts, flashlights, traffic lights and perimeter lighting.
17. Printer is an output device that produces a
permanent copy on paper of information.

18. Scanner is a computer input that scans and
copies the images and text on a piece of paper and
then converts them into digital signal that the
computer can store and process.
19. AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) is an
electrical regulator designed to automatically
maintain a constant voltage level.
20. UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is a
device that allows your computer to keep
running for at least a short time when the
primary power source is lost.
21. Computer Speaker is a hardware
component that emits sound from the
computer.
22. Wireless Router is a computer networking
device that forwards data packets between
computer networks, creating an overlay
internetwork.
23. Switch Hub or Network Hub is a computer
networking device that links network segments or
network devices.
24. Projector is an optical device that projects an
image (or moving images) onto a surface, commonly a
projection screen.
