Introduction To Science and Technology

Science is a systematic process of investigation using observation and experimentation to understand natural phenomena. It involves forming hypotheses and testing them through experiments and analysis of data to establish facts and reach conclusions. In contrast, superstitions are beliefs not based on scientific evidence that began from curiosity and observation but lacked experimentation. Early civilizations tried to explain natural events through common sense rather than scientific investigation. Ideas like a flat Earth were later disproven through discoveries in fields like astronomy and by explorers like Columbus. The scientific method is a standardized process used by scientists to investigate the world through measurable and repeatable steps.

SCIENCE
TECHNOLOGY
What is SCIENCE?
Science is a systematized body of
knowledge gather through carefully
observing and measuring events.
What is SCIENCE?
It comes from the Latin word Scientia –
having knowledge
Science involves observations followed by
experimentations leading to further observations and
further experimentation.

Science and Superstitions
Superstitions are beliefs
which are not usually
explained by the method
of the natural science
They began from curiosity and observation, but unlike science, no
experiment was conducted to test whether the claims are correct or not.

Our Field Trip Coordinators!
During the early centuries, people tried to explain
different occurrences in the environment using
common sense.

Answers to problems were entirely based on

qualitative observations formed without undertaking
scientific steps.
Example:
The belief that the earth is flat and square, while the
heavens were round.

Believers of flat earth model:

Thales
Anaximander
Leucippus
Democritus
Example:
With the discoveries and development in the fields of
maritime, astronomy, and geography, the idea of a
spherical earth was introduced by:
Aristotle
Eratosthenes
Posidonius
Example:
Christophe Columbus proved that the earth is round
when he reached India by sailing west from Spain.
What is Scientific
Investigation?
It is a way in which scientists and researchers use a systematic
process to answer questions about the world around us.

It is a way of finding the answer to a question using the carefully

arranged steps.

Scientific Method – a systematic process that involves

measurable observations to formulate, test or modify and prove a
hypothesis.
Components of a Scientific
Investigation
1. Statement of the Problem
2. Formulation of Hypothesis
3. Testing / Experimentation
4. Analysis of Data
5. Drawing of Conclusion
6. Reporting of Findings
