OBJECTIVES • Appreciate the History of art in the Philippines. • Distinguish contemporary period from the other art period. • Define contemporary arts • Familiarize with the significant development in the Philippine Art. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
3 Major traditions of the development of Philippine Art
1. Ethnic tradition 2. Spanish colonial tradition 3. American colonial and contemporary traditions 1. ETHNIC TRADITION Ethnic Art forms are primarily influenced by the geographical location and experiences of the Filipinos. • Dances during the pre-colonial times vary depending on the area where our ancestors thrive. • In the highland, dances mimics the movements of certain animals like birds. • Filipino near the sea mimics the movement of the fishes. VISUAL ARTS The following are dominant by making use of available materials surrounding them. • Pottery • Weaving • Wood carving • Metal crafting ARCHITECTURE Filipinos used local materials such as • anahaw • Bamboo • Cogon • Cane • Rattan LITERATURE Folk literatures that verbalized experiences: • Folk speeches • Songs • Narratives THEATER ARTS and MUSIC • Tribal presentations and rituals were the early theatrical performances depicting the beliefs of our ancestors. • In music, our ancestors also have their indigenous musical instruments like bamboo flutes and brass gongs. 2. SPANISH COLONIAL TRADITIONS • Tend to replace the Philippine indigenous arts with Western art forms. • Religion and secularization greatly influence the Philippine art • Friars were supervising the practice of arts with their agenda of propagating Christianity and maintaining the power of colonizers. • Literary works classified into religious and secular prose and poetry • Komedya became popular • Religious dances performed to venerate patrons and saints. SECULAR DANCES Performed in social functions • Valse • Fandango • Polka • minuet MUSIC
• Piano and other Western instruments.
• Bands and orchestra multiplied as Zarzuelas and operas. VISUAL ARTS and ARCHITECTURE • Spaniards introduced painting and sculpture • Stones and bricks were predominantly used in constructing buildings like churches, houses and government offices. • But the arts in Philippines did not result in a pure Western art but a mix of Western and indigenous art. 3. AMERICAN COLONIAL AND CONTEMPORARY TRADITIONS • Americans brought many changes in the politics, economy, education and culture. • There are Filipinos who went abroad to study, some studied under the tutelage of American educators and some learned through observation and personal experiences. MODERN ART • Refers to the practice of art in the 1860s – 1960s • It was during theses years that Western world was developing. • Modern art continuously develops even after World War II which led to the contemporary way of art making today. CONTEMPORARY ART • Refers to the recent and current practice of art ranging from the 1970s up to the present. • It mirrors the society and culture of the present times. • It uses a combination of different methods, materials and ideas that transcend the traditional way of art making.
