COMPUTER

LORNA J. ELNAS, LPT

What is a computer?

• A computer is an electronic device that

manipulates information, or data. It has the
ability to store, retrieve, and process data
TYPES OF
COMPUTER
MICROCOMPUTER/ PERSONAL COMPUTER

• A microcomputer is a complete computer on a small scale,

designed for use by one person at a time. A microcomputer is now
primarily called a personal computer (PC), or a device based on a
single-chip microprocessor.

Features of MICROCOMPUTER

• It is small in size
• Has low computing power compared to other types computer
• Only one user can use at a time
• The cost of micro computers are less.
• It is used for personal applications in our daily life
MINICOMPUTER / SERVER

• A computer with processing and storage capabilities

smaller than those of a mainframe but larger than those of
a microcomputer.

• Minicomputers are powerful tools for automating

manufacturing and for testing products. They also can be
used for controlling machines such as large planes and
ships.

• As communication networks increase in numbers and

sophistication, minicomputers are being used increasingly
as a network processor and manager.
Features of MINICOMPUTER / SERVER

• It is also called a midrange computer

• Medium sized and bigger than microcomputer

• The cost of minicomputer is average.
• More than one user can use simultaneously

• Used in small business companies, banks, and

supermarkets.
MAINFRAME COMPUTER

• Alternatively referred to as a big iron computer,

a mainframe is a large central computer with more
memory, storage space, and processing power than a
standard computer. A mainframe is used by governments,
schools, and corporations for added security and
processing large amounts of data, such as consumer
statistics, census data, or electronic transactions. Their
reliability and high stability allow these machines to run for
a very long time, even decades.
Features of MAINFRAME COMPUTER

• The cost of mainframe computers are high.

• It has high computing power
• A multiuser system where more than 100 users can use at
the same time

• Used for it’s reliability in handling multiple transactions

• Used in large business organizations such as Insurance
Companies and Universities
SUPER COMPUTER

• A computer or array of computers that act as one collective

machine capable of processing enormous amounts of
data. Supercomputers are used for very complex jobs
such as nuclear research or forecasting weather patterns.
Features of SUPER COMPUTER

• The largest and fastest computer.

• Most expensive computer

• A multiuser system where more than 100 users can use at

the same time.

• Used in very large organizations such as Weather

forecasting and Space
