1 To understand the basics of electrostatics and magnetostatics
To provide the detailed knowledge of generation, transmission and radiations of electromagnetic waves

Course Outcome
CO1 Understand the concepts of electrostatic and magnetostatic
CO2 Apply the acquired knowledge for solving fundamental problems of electrostatic and
magnetostatic.
CO3 Analyse the wave propagation mechanism using transmission lines theory
CO4 Evaluate and design a standard waveguide for required performance in given frequency
band.
CO5 Develop the solution of electromagnetic waves for different medium using various laws
and theorems.
Syllabus for EMFT
UNIT 1
Basics of EMFT: Introduction to electrostatics and magnetostatics, Integral Theorems: Gauss’s Divergence and Stroke’s
theorem, Gauss’s Law, Poisson’s Equation and Laplace Equation, Faraday’s Law of Electro-Magnetic Induction, Ampere’s
Circuital Law.
Maxwell's equations: Concept of displacement current, Maxwell's equations in differential and integral forms, Boundary
Conditions.
UNIT-2
Electromagnetic Waves: Uniform Plane waves. Wave equation and its solution in different media, Polarization, Skin depth,
Poynting theorem.
Transmission Lines: Types of transmission lines, Circuit representation of parallel plane transmission lines, transmission line
equations, Propagation constant, loss less transmission lines, Distortion less condition, Reflection, SWR.
UNIT-3
Wave guides: Rectangular waveguides, TE and TM waves in rectangular wave guides, characteristics of TE and TM mode in
rectangular wave guide: Propagation constant, Cut-off frequency/wavelength, Guide wavelength, Phase and Group velocity.
Dominant mode of rectangular wave guide, Impossibility of TEM wave in hollow wave guides, Wave impedance and
Characteristic impedance.
