Basic Concept in Subtraction
● Subtraction is the process of taking away or removing a number from
another number.
● Minus “-“ is the sign used in subtraction.
● Minuend- The bigger/larger number in subtraction. The number from
which another number is to be subtracted.
● Subtrahend- The smaller/lesser number in subtraction. The number that is
to be subtracted.
Basic concepts
● The answer in subtraction in Subtraction
is called “difference”.

Common Mistake #1:
• Not lining up your problems by place value.
Example: 6,781 6,781
- 1,320 - 1,320
Wrong 13,4781 Correct5,461
answer answer
• Line up the numbers involved NEATLY and CLEARLY
by place value.
Common Mistake #2:
• Flip-flopping the bottom and top number
Example: 9,853 9,853
- 2,918 - 2,918
Wrong 7,145 Correct6,935
answer answer
• Do NOT flip-flop the bottom and top numbers—leave
them in order.
Common Mistake #3:
• Forgetting to reduce the number you borrow from.
Example: 964 964
- 418 - 418
556 546
Wrong Correct
answer answer
• Borrow a 10 from a number to the left when needed. Lower
the number you are borrowing from by 1.
