Lesson Purpose/Intention
Objective:
To solve problems involving factors of
polynomials. (M8AL-IA-b-2)
Lesson Purpose/Intention
Polynomials are often called the language of
mathematics and algebra. They are used in nearly every
type of mathematics to show numbers and expressions
as a result of different mathematical operations. The
manipulation of polynomials allows us to simplify
mathematical expressions to make them more useable
to solve problems.

LESSON LANGUAGE
Numbers, symbols and operation
group together.
EXPRESSION
Lesson Language
An expression is in simplest form
when it cannot be simplified further.
SIMPLEST FORM
Lesson Language
To show or stand in place of.
REPRESENT
Lesson Language
The total length of a boundary of a
place figure.
PERIMETER
Lesson Language
The space enclosed by the boundary of
a plane figure.
AREA
Joe is planting a garden full of flowers for the summer. He
wants to plant carnations, roses, lilies and violets. He must
have a field that is broken up into different sections for
each type of flower to be planted as each flower has its
own growing needs. He is unsure how big a plot of land he
will be able to use. The plan of the field is shown below.

Questions:
Q1. Write an expression to represent the south side
of the garden in its simplest form.
Q2. Write an expression to represent the perimeter
of the garden in its simplest form.
Q3. Why would this expression be useful for Joe?
Q4. Write a polynomial expression for the area of the
carnations plot?
Questions:
Q1. Write an expression to represent the south side
of the garden in its simplest form.
Answer: Students have to first recognize which
section of the garden is south and that it equal to the
north or top side of the garden.
Adding the length together x + 3 + 2x – 4 which is
simplified to 3x - 1
Questions:
Q2. Write an expression to represent the
perimeter of the garden in its simplest form.
=2x + 4 + x + 2 + x + 3 + 2x - 4 + x
+ 1 + 2x + 5 + x + 3 + 2x – 4
= 12x + 10
Questions:
Q3. Why would this expression be useful for
Joe?
If he wanted to enlarge the size of
the garden, he could still determine
the measurements by changing the
value of x.
Questions:
Q4. Write a polynomial expression for the area of the
carnations plot?
(x+2)(x+3) = x + 5x + 62
