• It introduces the learners to basic
understanding of media and information
as channels of communication and tools
for the development of individuals and
societies.
• It also aims to develop students to be
creative and critical thinkers as well as
responsible users and competent
producers of media and information.
What is media and what is the
origin of the word media?
Media are the collective communication outlets
or tools that are used to store and deliver
information or data. It is either associated with
communication media, or the specialized 
communication businesses such as: print
media and the press,  photography,
advertising, cinema, broadcasting (radio and
television),  and/or publishing.
Origin: Media (the plural of medium), the
word medium is defined as "one of the means or
channels of  general communication, information,
or entertainment in society, as  newspapers, radio,
or television.
How is communication affected by media
and information?

MEDIA LITERACY
The ability to read, analyze and evaluate,
and produce communication in a variety
of media forms. It aims to empower
citizens by providing them with the
competencies (knowledge and skills)
necessary to engage with traditional
media and new technologies.
INFORMATION LITERACY

The ability to recognize when


information is needed and to
locate, evaluate, effectively use
and communicate information
in its various formats.
TECHNOLOGY (DIGITAL) LITERACY

The ability to use digital


technology, communication
tools or networks to locate,
evaluate, use and create
information.
MEDIA and INFORMATION LITERACY
• It includes information and communication/media
literacy and digital literacy.
• It is defined as a set of competencies that
empowers citizens to access, retrieve, understand,
evaluate and use, create , as well as share
information and media content in all formats,
using various tools in a critical, ethical and
effective way. In order to participate and engage
in personal, professional and societal activities.
TERMS and DEFINITIONS
• Preference- is the selecting of someone or
something over another or others.
• Habit- is a recurrent, often unconscious
pattern of behavior that is acquired through
frequent repetition.
• Lifestyle- is a way of life or living of a person or
group.
