Introduction To ICT

The document discusses the evolution of information and communication technology (ICT) over four generations from the 1950s to present. It defines ICT as the fusion of information technology (IT) with technologies for media broadcasting, audio/video processing and transmission, and telephony. Key events and innovations included the development of the transistor, integrated circuit, microprocessor, and personal computers created by Jobs, Gates, and Dell. ICT is now widely used in education, banking, industry, and e-commerce.

Introduction to Information

and Communications
Technology
Objectives

At the end of the unit, you should be able to:

• Know the evolution of communication technology;

• Differentiate IT (Information Technology) from ICT (Information
Communication Technology);
• Pay attention to the changes in technology over time;
• Demonstrate understanding of the use of ICT in the course taken; and
• Apply appropriate technology that are necessary in this new era.
The difference between IT and ICT
What is IT and ICT?
IT refers to a whole sector of the economy that manages
information using computers, networking, software, and
other tools. IT departments are often in charge of
storing, processing, retrieving, and safeguarding the
company's digital information. They have computers,
DBMS, servers, security systems, etc. to carry out these
activities. System administrators, database
administrators, programmers, network engineers, and IT
managers are just a few of the professionals who work in
IT departments.
The word "ICT" is frequently employed in the context of education.
ICT, despite the lack of a generally accepted definition, primarily refers
to the use of digital technology, such as computers, televisions, email,
etc.,to assist people or organizations in working with digital
information. You might think of ICT as an expanded synonym for IT. In
light of this, ICT can be viewed as the fusion of IT with technologies
for media broadcasting, audio/video processing and transmission, and
telephony.
Let us Define ICT.
