is
AI and Machine Learning
• AI traditionally refers to
an artificial creationof human-
like intelligence that
can learn, reason, plan,
perceive, or process natural
language.
• Narrow AI vs. General AI
• Narrow AI: focuses on the
development of new algorithms
& models in a field of computer
science referred to as machine
learning.
AI vs ML
• One of popular Google search requests goes
as follows: “are artificial intelligence &
machine learning the same thing?”
AI is a bigger concept to create intelligent machines that can
simulate human thinking capability & behavior, whereas, ML is an
application or subset of AI that allows machines to learn from
data without being programmed explicitly.
What is AI?
• AI is a technology using which we can create
intelligent systems that can simulate human
intelligence.
• AI is a science like mathematics or biology. It
studies ways to build intelligent programs &
machines that can creatively solve problems,
which has always been considered a human
prerogative ( িবেশষ Wমতা).
AI Types

Currently, scientists are working with weak AI & general AI. Strong AI (in future)
for which it is said that it will be intelligent than humans.
Narrow/Weak AI
• “Weak” AI, on the other hand, seeks to build
information-processing machines that appear
to have the full mental repertoire of human
persons (Searle 1997).”
• Weak, or narrow AI, is good at performing a
particular task, but it will not pass for human
in any other field outside of its defined
capacities.
Deep Blue
AlphaGO
General/strong AI
• “Strong” AI seeks to create artificial persons:
machines that have all the mental powers we
have, including phenomenal consciousness.
• This is the point in the future when machines
become human-like.
• They make their own decisions and learn
without any human input.
• Not only are they competent in solving logical
tasks but they also have emotions.

Super intelligence
• This is the piece of content everybody usually
expects when reading about AI.
• Machines, way ahead of humans.
– Smart, wise, creative, with excellent social skills.
• Its goal to either make human’s lives better or
destroy them all.
• Here comes the disappointment: the scientists of
today don’t even dream of creating autonomous
emotional machines like the Bicentennial Man.
What is ML?
• ML is a subfield of AI, which enables machines
to learn from past data or experiences without
being explicitly programmed.
• ML is a subset of that provides systems the
ability to automatically learn and improve
from experience without being explicitly
programmed.
AI ML

How can Machines Learn?
• ML is a subset of the larger field of AI that
“focuses on teaching computers how to learn
without the need to be programmed for
specific tasks,”
• The key idea behind ML is that it is possible to
create algorithms that learn from & make
predictions on data.”
3 Key components:
❑ Datasets
□ MLsystems aretrained on special collections of
samples called datasets.
□ The samples can include numbers, images, texts or any
other kind of data.
□ It usually takes a lot of time and effort to create a
good dataset.
□ It also highlights the critical role of data: the more data
available to train the algorithm, the more it learns.
□ Discover more about data preparation for ML (
https://developers.google.com/machine-learning/dat
a-prep/process).
❑ Features
• Features are important pieces of data
that work as the key to the solution of the
task.
• They demonstrate to the machine what to pay
attention to.
• Inferring new instructions from data is
the core strength of ML.
❑ Algorithm
• It is possible to solve the same task
using different algorithms.
• Depending on the algorithm, the accuracy
or speed of getting the results can be
• different.
Sometimes order to better
in achieve you different
performance,
algorithms, like in combine
ensemble learning.
• If the quality of the dataset was high, and the
features were chosen right
– an ML-powered system can become bette
rata given task than humans.
– ML algorithms accurately identified patients with
cancer who were at risk of 6-month mortality.

s
Why Now?
❑ Data availability: Just over 3 billion people are online with an
estimated 17 billion connected devices or sensors.
• That generates a large amount of data which, combined with
decreasing costs of data storage, is easily available for use.
• ML can use this as training data for learning algorithms,
developing new rules to perform increasingly complex tasks.
❑ Computing power: Powerful computers & the ability to connect
remote processing power through the Internet make it possible
for ML techniques that process enormous amounts of data.
❑ Algorithmic innovation: New ML techniques, specifically in
layered neural networks (deep learning) have inspired new
services, but is also spurring investments & research in other
parts of the field.
Key Considerations
❑ Socio-economic impacts. The new functions &
services of AI are expected to have significant socio-
economic impacts.
• The ability of machines to exhibit advanced cognitive
skills to process natural language, to learn, to plan and
to perceive, makes it possible for new tasks to be
performed by intelligent systems, sometimes with
more success than humans.
• New applications of AI could open up exciting
opportunities for more effective medical care, safer
industries/services, and boost productivity on a
massive scale.
❑ Transparency, bias and accountability. AI-
made decisions can have serious impacts in
people’s lives.
▪AI may discriminate against some individuals
or make errors due to biased training data.
▪How a decision is made by AI is often hard to
understand, making problems of bias harder
to solve and ensuring accountability much
more difficult.
❑ New uses for data. Machine learning algorithms have
proved efficient in analyzing & identifying patterns in large
amounts of data, commonly referred to as “Big Data”.
• Big Data is used to train learning algorithms to increase
their performance.
• This generates an increasing demand for data, encouraging
data collection & raising risks of oversharing of information
at the expense of user privacy.
❑ Security and safety. Advancements in AI & its use will also
create new security/safety challenges.
• These include unpredictable & harmful behaviour of the AI
agent, but also adversarial learning by malicious actors.
❑ Ethics. AI may make choices that could be deemed
unethical, yet also be a logical outcome of the
algorithm, emphasizing the importance to build in
ethical considerations into AI systems and algorithms.
❑ New ecosystems. Like the impact of mobile Internet,
AI makes new applications, services, & new means of
interacting with the network possible.
• For example, through speech & smart agents, which
may create new challenges to how open or accessible
the Internet becomes.

Use Machine Learning

Why ML?
• Some tasks cannot be defined well, except by
examples (e.g., recognizing people).
• Relationships & correlations can be hidden
within large amounts of data
✔ ML may be able to find these relationships.
• Human designers often produce machines
that do not work as well as desired in the
environments in which they are used.
Why Machine Learning?
• The amount of knowledge available about certain
tasks might be too large for explicit encoding by
humans (e.g., medical diagnostic).
• Environments change over time.
• New knowledge about tasks is constantly being
discovered by humans (e.g. autonomous driving)
✔ It may be difficult to continuously re-design
systems “by hand”.
Pros & Cons
❑ Pros:
□ often much more accurate than human-crafted rules (since
data driven)
□ humans often incapable of expressing what they know (e.g.,
rules of English, or how to recognize letters), but can easily
classify examples
□ don’t need a human expert or programmer
□ automatic method to search for hypotheses explaining data
□ cheap & flexible — can apply to any learning task

❑ Cons:
□ need a lot of labeled data
□ error prone — usually impossible to get perfect accuracy

Fuelling ML with Data
• ML is already all around us, unlocking
our phones with a glance or a touch,
suggesting music we like to listen to,
and teaching cars to drive themselves.
• Underpinning all this is the explosion of
data.
▪ Data is growing faster than ever before.
• By the year 2020, it’s estimated that
every human being on the planet will be
creating 1.7 megabytes of new
information every second!

-There will be 50 billion smart connected devices in the world, all developed to collect,
analyse and share data. This data is vital to AI.
-ML models need data… Just as we humans ‘learn’ our tacit knowledge through our
experiences, by attempting a task again and again to gradually improve, ML models need to
be ‘trained’
ML: Current Trends

https://www.youtube.com/wa
tch?v=Jt09PIXWenY&ab_chan
nel=TotallyExplained
• Over the years, ML has made possible the concept
of
□ self-driving cars, effective web search, spam free emails,
practical speech recognition software, personalized
marketing and so on.
• Today, machine learning is increasingly
being deployed in
□ credit card purchase fraud detection, personalized
advertising though patternidentification, personalized
shopping/entertainment recommendations, to determine
cab arrival times, pick-up locations, and finding routes on
maps.
Top 7 ML trends of 2020
❑ Regulation of Digital Data
□ In today's world, data is everything.
□ The emergence of various technologies has propelled the
supplement of data.
□ In 2020, an enormous amount of data will be produced,
□ is all the data relevant?
□ Industries will require ML to categorize the relevant data for
better efficiency.
□ Data Scientist Jobs Will be Up for Grabs
□ Data scientist tops the job chart with the huge
gapin demand & supply of resources.
❑ ML in Voice Assistance
• According to the emarketer study in 2019, it was estimated that
111.8 million people in the US would use a voice assistant for
various purposes.
• So it's quite evident that voice assistants are a considerable part
of industries.
• Siri, Cortana, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa are some of
the in-demand examples of intelligent personal assistants.
• ML + AI, aids in processing operations with the utmost accuracy.
• Therefore, ML is going to help industries to perform complicated
and significant tasks effortlessly while enhancing productivity.
❑ Effective Marketing
• Marketing is a vital factor for every business to survive in the
prevailing cut-throat competition.
• It promotes the presence and visibility of business while driving
the intended results.
• But with the existing multiple marketing platforms, it has become
challenging even to prove the business existence.
• However, if a business is successful enough to extract the patterns
from the existing user data, then the business is very much
expected to formulate successful and effective marketing
strategies.
• And to analyze the data, ML can be deployed to mine data and
evaluate research methods for more beneficial results.
• Adoption of ML in defining effective marketing strategies is highly
anticipated
❑ New Approaches to Cyber Security
□ In recent times, cyberspace has become the talk of the
town.
□ As reported by Panda Security, about 230,000 malware
samples are created every day by hackers, and the intention
to create the malware is always crystal clear.
□ And with the computers, networks, programs, and data
centers, it becomes even more problematic to check the
malware attacks.
□ ML technology that aids the multiple layers of protection by
automating complex tasks and detecting cyber-attacks on
its own.
□ ML in cyber security works both ways, if used by potential
hackers it can result in stronger attacks while if deployed by
cyber security firms it can increase the level of security
❑ Robotic Process Automation Rule the World
□ The deployment of robotic
process automation extends to finance,
health & even manufacturing processes
where robots make the task easier.
❑ Improved IT Operations
□ There is huge data being generated through
h/w components, s/w components, server applications, &
OS.
□ Not all the data is fit as inputs to ML models.
□ ML captures, cleans data & generates intelligent business
insights to make an IT enterprise become proactive instead
of reactive.
□ Models built on ML operate on clean data for
training/testing phases.
□ ML algorithms assist IT operations teams to find the root
cause of issues, supported by predictive analytics for
improved operations.
❑ Transparency in Decision-Making
• ML through predictive models brings
transparency in decision-making in the
multitude of domains.
• ML is an effective tool in transparent decision-
making where laws/regulations (i.e., in HR
operations treating job applications equally
without consideration of age, gender, religion,
caste, creed, color, etc.) come into the
picture.

ML: Future Trends
• ML + AI are no longer the subject matter
of science fiction.
• Instead, they are the driving forces
behind billion-dollar industries
– such as autonomous-driving cars, medical
diagnosing, and anti-terrorism.
It seems that we’ve already seen more than we
were ready to VR in video games, IoT in
medicine & smart cities being brought to life.
Healthcare sector: too much going on & everything is amazing
• Biggest & most crucial industries in the world
so no wonder it’s the one that is heavily using
the latest technologies — because it’s the
matter of life/death.
❖ ML for Covid-19
• Digital epidemiological surveillance
• Rapid case (Medical image
identification analysis)
• Digital contact tracing
Military Autonomy
• ML has reached a point that fully autonomous systems
will soon control military ships and even bases.
• Via behavioral patterning, ML can estimate the
probability that an approaching force is friendly or
belligerent.
• In fact, a few ground vehicles equipped in this manner
are controlled completely by ML to the degree that
little human oversight is actually needed.
• In these instances, machine learning has powered AI
enough that an AI-powered sentry can detect, assess,
and even fire upon a threat with deadly force.
• The trend here is one of humans becoming
more comfortable with machines making lethal
decisions.
• As comfort levels rise, the number and complexity of
autonomous military units are also expected to rise.
Security in the Home
• AI-driven home-security systems are not quite
common, but they are on the rise.
• For instance, specific components, such as smart locks
can communicate with your smartphone.
• However, these systems are slated for replacement by
monitoring systems that can see your home via video,
detect a threat, and notify authorities.
• Additionally, ML is predicted to transform home
security and in-home personal security in that systems
will be able to predict a threat based on interpreting
behavior, such as abuse or even kidnapping.
Vision
• ML has often restricted to mathematical
been calculations, and game-
statistical performance. analysis, based
• However, ML is now able to correctly identify real-
world objects.
• How these objects are interpreted depends on the
specific use of the robot or software, but vision-based
ML can identify such things as people, cats, or terrain.
• Consequently, sight-powered AI is on the rise, which is
expected to impact home security, driving,
and healthcare.
No More Black Boxes
• Much of what ML accomplishes becomes unknowable at various
points of the process.
• For instance, ML programs that develop super-human reasoning in
various games make moves that humans describe as alien.
• The reasons behind the moves are simply not expected,
and reverse engineering such decisions are nearly impossible.
• Simply put, humans are usually in the dark when it comes
to understanding how AI operates. This is changing.
• For instance, research is being conducted on the possible paths
programmers can take to hard wire transparency into ML.
• Additionally, ML is being coded in a way so as to make
the algorithms more understandable.
• Finally, rudimentary efforts are underway to make ML report on
the process behind performance.
Displacement
• Everyone knows that jobs involving repetitious actions are being
taken over by robots, smart or dumb.
• However, ML has also made certain white-collar professions
vulnerable to displacement.
• For instance, x-ray interpretation is something ML is making
advances in, putting the job of x-ray technicians in the cross hairs
of AI displacement.
• Similarly, attorneys are expected to be displaced by ML capable of
predicting the best pathways to winning a suit.
• Currently, this type of AI that predicts legal strategies is overseen
by partners who also keep a staff of attorneys on the payroll.
• However, as partners become comfortable with AI decisions and
as AI becomes routinely successful in making legal decisions, jobs
for interns and junior-level attorneys are predicted to decline.
Internet of Things
• Currently, devices that can connect to one another are deemed smart.
• However, this concept of smart is evolving as ML is being applied to
the so-called IoT.
• For instance, different companies have developed digital sentries that listen in
on people via their cell phones, televisions, and speakers.
– Alexa and Siri are two such sentries, and they are specific to Amazon and Apple,
respectively.
• However, a more general personality is coming in the form of voice-based
request software that will be connected to the IoT.
– If you have a coffee pot, you can ask this sentity to make your coffee.
– If you are on your way to the office, you can ask that your car drive you to work.
• AsML develops, the currently segmented personalities will
be connected and be able to converse and share data.
• The result will be a generalized sentry that governs many of today’s
routine tasks.
Cyborgs & General Augmentation
• On the rise are gadgets that can monitor
our biological data and respond
accordingly.
• For instance, individual hackers are
creating devices connected to people,
and these devices augment faulty
biology by delivering insulin for people
with diabetes.
• However, AI is also being used to help
broaden people’s perception via
augmented glasses.
• Augmented apps in smartphones are
becoming more common, and ML BCI
allow quadriplegics to talk and interact
with games.
• Although the industry is in its infancy, progress is doubling every year or so. In
2021, Elon Musk is already planning to test brain implants that directly link
brains to computer software.
Attuned AI Friendship

• ML is employed by a variety of retail companies to make

suggestions to prospective customers.
• However, ML is becoming much more adept at serving
current needs of people wanting diversion or
entertainment.
• For instance, Netflix employs ML to understand what
kind of shows people like.
• Making suggestions for sales is one thing.
• Making on-the-fly suggestions to current customers is
quite another because the suggestions are not a sales
tool so much as they are a means of satisfaction.
• The ML that powered this suggestion service worked
so well that it was able to save Netflix over
$1,000,000,000 in lost revenue due to subscription
cancellations.
• This type of personal care is currently passive.
• For instance, the interaction with people is text based,
and the ability of the AI to be attuned to personal
preferences comes from monitoring clicks on a screen.
• However, ML will soon morph into verbal interaction
that makes the AI more personable.
• As ML becomes more adept at understanding what
people want in specific instances, AI will become
less of a sales tool and more of a digital friend.
Conversation
• NLP is on the rise, and it has made impressive
strides that allow machines to construct textual
information based on a random initial input.
• In fact, one NLP can write poetry, stories, and
news articles that are disturbingly convincing.
• Upcoming progress is slated to become
conversational, allowing companies to serve
specific needs of customers with questions about
a company’s products or services.
Politics and Fake News
• Deepfakes are on the rise, and companies and governments
are bracing against the potential confusing impact such
technology will have on populations.
• For instance, ML has reached a point that it can listen to
audio data from someone and then create nuanced speech
patterns that very closely match the sound and speech
patterns of the actual person.
• Additionally, ML is becoming more adept at being able to
analyze hundreds of photographs of a single person.
• After analyzing the images, AI can then
reconstruct video-quality depictions of the person.
• The result of these two technologies is something called a
deepfake.
• Combined, deepfake audio and video will allow AI to
construct seemingly authentic messages from celebrities,
government leaders, or even regular folk.
• Moreover, the technology is expected to be entirely
convincing within the next 12 months.
• In terms of delivery, it is expected that such fake media will
be delivered to people via social media as social websites
are currently ill equipped to detect and combat deepfakes
as long as they seem to fall within the company’s terms of
service.
• Even when such media is finally uncovered and removed,
the intended audience will likely already be influenced in
one direction or another.
– In 2012, the Obama administration used ML tools
to analyze the reception of policy announcement
during 2012 presidential election.
– During the last presidential election in the US,
some organizations analyzed, for example how
many negative mentions about particular
candidates appeared in the media & news reports.
Rise of Robotics
From Silicon Valley to London to Shanghai - AI startups are in
abundance. But with any gold rush a few chosen will find gold &
many others will go home disappointed.
