Intramolecular Force vs Intermolecular Force

WHAT IS
INTRAMOLECULAR
FORCE?
It is any force that binds
together the atoms making
up a molecule or
compound, not to be
confused with
intermolecular forces, which
are the forces present
between molecules.
LEWIS DOT
STRUCTURE
It also known as Lewis dot
formulas, Lewis dot structures,
electron dot structures, or
Lewis electron dot structures,
are diagrams that show the
bonding between atoms of a
molecule, as well as the lone
pairs of electrons that may
exist in the molecule.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES
OF INTRAMOLECULAR
FORCE?
1. IONIC BOND
• It is the complete transfer of valence
electron(s) between atoms.
• It is the type of chemical bond that
generates two oppositely charged
ions.
• In Ionic Bond, the metal loses
electrons to become a positively
charged cation, whereas the
nonmetal accepts those electrons to
become a negatively charged anion.
EXAMPLE:
Sodium (Na) and Chlorine (Cl)
WHAT ARE THE TYPES
OF INTRAMOLECULAR
FORCES?
2. COVALENT BOND
• It is a chemical bond that involves the
sharing of electron pairs between
atoms.
• These electron pairs are known as
shared pairs or bonding pairs, and the
stable balance of attractive and
repulsive forces between atoms, when
they share electrons, is known as
covalent bonding.
WHAT IS
INTERMOLECULAR
FORCES?
These are the forces which mediate
interaction between molecules,
including forces of attraction or
repulsion which act between atoms
and other types of neighboring
particles, e.g. atoms or ions.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES
OF INTERMOLECULAR
FORCES?
1. ION-DIPOLE INTERACTION
• It is an attractive force that results
from the electrostatic attraction
between an ion and a neutral
molecule that has a dipole.
• Most commonly found in solutions.
• A positive ion (cation) attracts the
partially negative end of a neutral
polar molecule.
EXAMPLE:
Hydrogen Chloride (HCl) and Chlorine (Cl)
WHAT ARE THE TYPES
OF INTERMOLECULAR
FORCES?
2. DIPOLE-DIPOLE INTERACTIONS
• are attractive forces between the
positive end of one polar molecule
and the negative end of another
polar molecule.
• The partially positive end of a polar
molecule is attracted to the
partially negative end of another.
EXAMPLE:
Hydrogen Chloride (HCl)
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF
INTERMOLECULAR FORCES?
3. HYDROGEN BOND
• Abbreviated as H-bond
• It is a primarily electrostatic force
of attraction between a
Hydrogen (H) atoms which is
covalently bond to a more
electronegative atom or group,
particularly the second-raw
elements like Nitrogen (N),
Oxygen (O) or Fluorine (F)
EXAMPLE:
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF
INTERMOLECULAR FORCES?
4. LONDON DISPERSION FORCES
Are a type of force acting
between atoms and molecules
that are normally electrically
symmetric; that is, the
electrons are symmetrically
distributed with respect to the
nucleus.
