Introduction

There are several phrases that are commonly


used when trying to give examples as a way
to introduce a new term or explain situation.
Overview

These phrases essentially have the same


meaning, but they are not used in the same
way.
• Phrases used within a sentence
• Phrases used to begin a new sentence
Phrases Used Within A Sentence

Each phrase can be used within a sentence when it is


followed by a list of items that elaborate on or show
examples for the main idea of the sentence

• I can play quite a few musical instruments, for example,


the flute, the guitar, and the piano

• I can play quite a few musical instruments,

Phrases Used to Begin A New
Sentence

Usually only for example and for instance can begin new
sentences. Each can begin a new sentence when the phrase is
followed by a complete idea or sentence(not a list of items).
• My father loves going to restaurants that serve exotic
foods. For example, last week he went to a restaurant
that serves deep-fried rattlesnake.

"SUCH AS"

We can use such as to introduce an


example or examples of something
we mentioned earlier. We normally
use a comma before such as when
we present a list of examples.
However, when there is only one
example, we don't need to use a
comma.

The shop specializes in Countries such as
tropical fruits, such as Sweden have a long
pineapples, mangoes and record of welcoming
papayas. refugees from all over
the world.
In almost all cases the word like can be used to replace for
example. When used this way, it should be before noun or noun
phrase.
• "Have you been to any Asian countries, like Vietnam,
Cambodia, Laos or North Korea?"
• Do you ahve any hobbies, like stamp collecting or
photography?"
