IB Design Platform

The document outlines the steps of the IB Design Cycle, which is a structured process used to solve problems and develop innovative solutions. It describes the key activities at each step, including understanding the problem, researching and analyzing it, developing ideas, creating a plan, testing prototypes, evaluating results, presenting the solution, and reflecting on the process. The overall goal of the design cycle is to guide students through turning ideas into practical solutions using creativity, critical thinking, and technical skills.

Evaluating Creating the Solution
• Design testing methods • Construct a logical plan
• Evaluate the success of the solution • Demonstrate technical skills
• Explain how the solution could be improved • Follow the plan to create the solution
• Explain the impact of the solution • Justify changes made to the design
Overview of IB Design Cycle
• Today, we will be learning about the IB Design
Cycle, a structured process that helps us solve
problems and create innovative solutions.
• Design and Technology is all about using
creativity and critical thinking to produce
practical solutions to real-world challenges.
• The IB Design Cycle will guide us through this
process step by step.
Understand the Problem
This is the first step in the design cycle.
We need to identify and understand the problem we
want to solve.
We gather information, research, and define the
problem clearly.
Questions to ask: What is the issue? Who is affected?
Why is it important?
Inquire and Analyze

 In this step, we gather more detailed information

about the problem.
 We analyze the problem from different perspectives.
 We brainstorm ideas and explore potential solutions.
 Questions to ask: What are the possible solutions?
What are the limitations?
Develop Ideas

 This is where creativity comes into play.

 We generate different ideas for solving the problem.
 We sketch, make diagrams, and visualize our concepts.
 Questions to ask: How can we solve the problem in
innovative ways?
Create a Plan

 Now we start planning how to bring our ideas to life.

 We outline the steps and resources needed for each
solution.
 We consider the practicality and feasibility of our plans.
 Questions to ask: What materials do we need? How can
we execute our ideas?
Experiment and Test

 This is the hands-on part of the process.

 We build prototypes or models based on our plans.
 We test these prototypes to see how well they work.
 We gather data and analyze the results.
 Questions to ask: Does the prototype work as
intended? What improvements can we make?
Evaluate and Refine

 In this step, we review the test results and gather feedback.

 We identify strengths and weaknesses of each solution.
 We decide which solution is the most effective.
 We make refinements and modifications to improve the chosen
solution.
 Questions to ask: Which solution is the best? How can we make
it even better?
Present and Communicate

 This is where we showcase our final solution.

 We present our work to others, explaining the problem and our
solution.
 We use visuals, presentations, and reports to communicate
effectively.
 Questions to ask: How can we clearly explain our solution to
others?
Reflect and Review

 In the final step, we reflect on the entire process.

 We think about what we've learned and how we've grown.
 We consider what worked well and what could be
improved.
 Questions to ask: What did we learn from this experience?
How can we apply it in the future?
Summary

• Remember, the IB Design Cycle is not a linear process. You might

need to go back and revisit previous steps as you learn more and
make improvements.
• This cycle helps us develop important skills like problem-solving,
creativity, communication, and collaboration.
• As 8th graders, you are already capable of using this process to
tackle real-world challenges and make a positive impact.
