RENDERING WOOD FINISH
RENDERING WOOD FINISH
Choice of media:
• Dark brown pencil
• Light brown / tan pencil
• Black pencil
• 0.5mm black fine liner pen
• Eraser
• Tissue
• Sharpener
STEP 1:
Shave the tan pencil over the line drawing.
STEP 2:
Use a folded tissue to apply the powder evenly over the
area to create a medium tone.
STEP 3:
Use your eraser to clean up the excess powder around the
shape.
STEP 4:
Use your eraser to reduce the tone of the surfaces that are
the lightest tone.
STEP 5:
Using the same coloured tan pencil, tone the shaded
surfaces. Ensure that you have three distinct tones.
STEP 6:
Using your 0.5mm fine liner; first draw in the end grain
pattern making sure that the curved lines arc up like a smile.
STEP 7:
Using the 0.5 mm fine liner, now draw in the surface grain
pattern. The lines should connect with the ends of the
curved lines of the end grain.
STEP 8:
Once more, using your 0.5 mm fine liner, draw in the side
grain pattern. The lines should relate to the ends of the
curved lines of the end grain.
STEP 9:
Taking into account the direction of light, using a black
pencil or your greylead pencil lightly plot the shadow
shape on the ground and then colour it. You will also need
to add shadows on the object’s surfaces. Use a dark
brown pencil to add these.
