Shearing and Processing of Wool

The document discusses the key processes involved in shearing and processing wool. It begins by explaining that shearing involves removing the wool coat from sheep using shears, scissors or electric clippers without harming the animals. The wool is then scoured by washing it in hot water and detergent to remove impurities. Next, the wool is sorted, graded, and carded to disentangle and straighten the fibers. The carded wool is spun into yarn which is then woven or knitted into fabric. The final steps are weaving or knitting the yarn into fabric and finishing processes to create clothing, tablecloths and bags.

SHEARING AND

PROCESSING OF WOOL
STARTER ACTIVITY
SHEARING
 SHEARING IS THE PROCESS OF REMOVAL OF THE WOOLEN COAT
OR FLEECE FROM THE ANIMAL IS CALLED SHEARING. THIS IS
DONE WITHOUT HARMING THE ANIMALS BY USING SHAERING
TOOLS SUCH AS SCISSORS, HAND BLADES AND ELECTRIC SHEARS.
 SHEARING IS USUALLY DONE DURING THE HOT SEASONS. THE
AMOUNT OF WOOL PRODUCED BY THE SHEEP VARIES FROM 1-
3kg.
NOW, LET’S WATCH A VIDEO
ON SHEARING
SCOURING
 WOOL TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE SHEEP IS
CALLED ‘RAW’ OR ‘GREASE WOOL’. IT CONTAINS
LANOLIN , SAND, DIRT, GREASE, VEGETABLE
MATTERAND DRIED SWEAT, AND REQUIRES
THROUGH CLEANING.
 THEREFORE, TO MAKE THE WOOL SUITABLE FOR
MAKING FABRIC, IT IS SCOURED. SCOURING
INVOLVES WASHING THE SHORN WOOL IN HOT
WATER AND DETERGENT AND THEN DRYING.
SORTIN
G
 THE FIRST PROCESS AT THE MILL IS SORTING.
 AFTER SCOURING, THE DAMAGED OR INFERIOR
WOOL IS REMOVED. THIS PROCESS IS CALLED
SORTING.
GRADING
 AFTER SORTING THE WOOL, GRADING
IS DONE.
 THE PROCESS OF SORTING THE WOOL
ACCORDING TO LENGTH, COLOUR AND
TEXTURE OF FIBRES IS CALLED
GRADING.
CARDING
 BEFORE WOOL CAN BE USED FOR MAKING FABRIC, IT IS
DISENTANGLED AND CLEANED. THE INTERMIXED FIBRES
ARE SEPERATED TO FORM CONTINOUS FIBRES. THIS
PROCESS IS CALLED CARDING.
 IN CARDING, THE WOOL FIBRES ARE PASSED THROUGH
A SERIES OF METTAL TEETH TO STRAIGHTEN THE FIBRES.
MAKING
YARN
 CARDED WOOL IS NOW TWISTED INTO
A ROPE CALLED SLIVER. THE SLIVER IS
STRETCHED AND TWISTED INTO THIN
YARN. SPINNING FOR WOOLEN YARN IS
TYPICALLY DONE ON MULE SPINNING
MACHINE.
WEAVING AND
FINISHING.

 WOOLLEN YARN IS THEN WOVEN OR KNITTED INTO

FABRIC, WHICH IS THEN USED TO MAKE FINISHED
PRODUCTS SUCH AS CLOTHES, TABLE CLOTHES AND
BAGS.
