Input Devices

Input devices allow data and commands to be entered into a computer. Common input devices include keyboards for text entry, mice for pointing and selecting, and scanners for converting physical documents into digital files. Other input devices are used for audio, photos, barcodes, and connectivity. The keyboard and mouse are standard input devices used with most computers.

INPUT DEVICES

What is Input?
Input is any data entered into a computer’s
memory.
Types of Input

• Data: Information in raw or unorganized form (such as alphabets,

numbers, or symbols) that refer to, or represent, conditions, ideas, or
objects that a computer converts to meaningful information.

• Software: The programs and other operating information that are put into
a computer’s memory via any storage devices.

• Commands: An instruction to a computer or device to perform a specific

task.
What are Input Devices?
In computing, an input device is a piece of
computer hardware equipment used to provide
data to an information processing system such as
a computer or other information appliance.
Examples of input devices include keyboards,
mouse, scanners, digital cameras and joysticks.
Types of Input Devices
1. Typing Devices
Keyboard

2. Pointing Devices
Mouse, joystick, trackball, light pen or stylus, touch screen,
touchpad.
• 3. Optical Reading Devices
Bar code reader, Scanner/Image Scanner, Retinal I.D, Finger Print I.D

• 4. Magnetic Reading Devices

Floppy Disk Drive, External Hardrive/disk, USB Port

5. Audio Input Devices
Microphone, Headset

6. Connectivity Devices
Bluetooth, WiFi, Modem/router
Keyboard
• Keyboard is the most commonly used input device.
• They allow data entry into a computer system by pressing a set of
keys neatly mounted on a keyboard.
• It contains some extra command keys and function keys that affect
the operation of computer.

Types of Keys on a Keyboard

• Alphanumeric Keypad
• Numeric Keypad
• Function Keys
• Control Keys (Home, End, Insert, Pg Up, Pg Dn, Esc, Alt, Ctrl)
• Special Purpose Keys (Enter, Spacebar, Backspace, Numlock, Shift,
CAPS, Tab, PrntScr, Delete, Insert)
Types of Keyboards
• Standard Keyboard: This is the standard input device attached to all
computers.
• Ergonomic Keyboard: Ergonomic means correct posture and hand
position. Ergonomic correct keyboards are designed to help the
user’s hand stay positioned correctly reducing bending and strain.
• Wireless Keyboards: These use three basic types of connection.
Bluetooth
Infrared
Radio frequency

• Multimedia and Gaming Keyboard: These are designed for playing

video and has hot keys for volume control, play, stop and mute
operations. These keyboards are designed for the convenience of the
gamers and these provide the required controls like back lighting.
Mouse
• Mouse is the most popular point-and-draw device.
• It is used to move the cursor on the screen.
• It has two to three buttons and can be clicked or double clicked to
perform tasks.
Types of Mouse
• Optical Mouse
It is an advanced computer pointing device that uses a LED and an optical
sensor in place of the traditional mouse ball. Movement is detected by
sensing changes in reflected light, rather than by interpreting the motion of a
rolling sphere.

• Wireless Mouse
It communicates with the computer via radio waves (often using Bluetooth
hardware and protocol) so that a cord is not needed (but such mice need
internal batteries).
• Physical Mouse
It is operated by the hand as its movement is based on the controls
that synchronize the cursor on the screen. This mouse needs a ball so
that the cursor can move on the computer monitor. A mouse pad is
necessary so that the cursor can move in different directions.
Other Types of Input Devices
• Trackball Joystick
Rotatable ball in fixed socket Small stick movable in any direction
in a fixed socket

• Light Pen
When the tip of the pen is moved
over a screen surface it is able to
detect the light coming from the
limited view of field.
• Touch Sensitive Screen • Touch Pad
Special screen that detects the Relays position and orientation to the
position of a finger touching it. receiver. Replaces mouse where desk
space is limited.

• Digital Camera
Latest input device. Helps take pictures
which are saved in its internal memory
with no need of a film roll. Latest digital
cameras can take snapshots and record
videos.
Latest Developments in Input Devices
• Speech recognition
• Advantages: minimal user training, freedom of hands etc., opportunities for
physically disabled
• Disadvantages: recognition system often needs training, liable to error;
subject to interference from background noise; difficult for application to
interpret human speech

• Handwritten input
• Advantages: easier to separate words, may need some training for users
• Disadvantages: cursive script difficult to read, wide variety of handwriting
styles, system may need training
