Second Order Systems

This document discusses time response specifications for second-order underdamped systems with varying damping factors. It defines key terms like damping ratio, natural frequency, damping frequency, peak overshoot, peak time, rise time, and settling time. The output for an undamped system and underdamped systems are explored, with underdamped systems exhibiting decaying oscillations from one bounce to the next depending on the damping ratio value.

TIME RESPONSE OF

SECOND ORDER SYSTEM

Determination of time response specification of a
second order Under damped System, for different
damping factors.
SECOND ORDER CONTROL SYSTEM

 The order of a control system is determined by the

power of ‘s’ in the denominator of its transfer function.
 If the power of s in the denominator of the transfer
function of a control system is 2, then the system is
said to be second order control system.
Damping Ratio (ζ)
 The damping ratio is a measure describing
how rapidly the oscillations decay from one
bounce to the next.
 The damping ratio is a system parameter,
denoted by ζ (zeta), that can vary from un
damped (ζ = 0), under damped (ζ < 1) through
critically damped (ζ = 1) to over damped (ζ >
1).
Natural Frequency (ωn) & Damping
Frequency (ωd)
 The natural frequency of a second-order
system is the frequency of oscillation of the
system without damping.

 Damping Frequency (ωd)

Peak overshoot Mp
Peak overshoot Mp is defined as the
deviation of the response at peak time
from the final value of response. It is also
called the maximum overshoot.
Peak Time
Itis the time required for the response to
reach the peak value for the first time.
Rise Time (Tr)
The time required for the response to
rise from 10% to 90% of its final value,
is called as rise time for underdamped
second order systems.

Where,
Settling Time (Ts)
The time required for a signal to reach a
steady state is called as settling time.
Expected Output for Undamped
Condition (ζ=0)
Expected Output for Under
damped Condition (0<ζ<1)
