Teph Group 3 Lesson 1 Topic 1

The document discusses how ancient civilizations developed science and technology to meet needs around transportation, communication, production, security, health and architecture. It explains how advances in science and technology caused societies to change over time as new innovations were introduced and old technologies were modified. A number of examples are provided around the types of technologies developed in ancient times and how fields like dentistry, toilets, and weapons evolved through different time periods like the Middle Ages and modern times.

In the ancient times, people are concerned with tranportation and
navigation, communication and record keeping, mass production, security
and protection, as well as health, aesthetic and architecture. Science and

Ancient
Technology keeps on advancing in order to meet the growing needs of
people along these areas. Due to the constant innovation introduced by
Science and Tecnhology, which has the end goal of improving lives and
making the work easier, faster and efficient, our society respond by
changing as well. These changes are evident as each ancient civilization

times
keep on creating technology that has been modofied and that is being
used today.
•In ancient times, technology was defined by Homer and Hesiod as
the spoken word of manual craft or cunning skill.

•Aristotle coined the Greek term technologia and split scientific

knowledge into three parts: theoretical science, practical science,
and productive science.

Aristotle divided the theoretical sciences into three groups: physics,

mathematics, and theology.

Physics is the branch of science that deals with the structure of

matter and how the fundamental constituents of the universe
interact.

Mathematics is the science and study of quality, structure, space,

and change.
Theology is the study of religious faith, practice, and
experience.

Practical science is about human things, or human

action, praxis, matters that are subject to change.

The second division of science for Aristotle was

Productive Science. Such a science aims at the
creation of a product. A science of computers,
for example, aims at the production of
computers.
DENTISTRY

Dentistry is one of the oldest medical

professions, dating back to 7000 B.C.
with the Indus Valley Civilization.
However, it wasn’t until 5000 B.C. that
descriptions related to dentistry and
tooth decay were available.
The Indus Valley
Civilisation are credited
with the invention of
the button and the
earliest one we have in
existence today dates
from around 2000BCE
and is made from a
curved shell. The first
buttons were used as
ornamental
embellishments to a
person’s attire and
signified wealth or
status.
The word “latrine,” or
latrina in Latin, was used
to describe a private
toilet in someone’s home,
usually constructed over
a cesspit. Public toilets
were called foricae.
They were often
attached to public
baths, whose water was
used to flush down the
filth.

The start of the middle ages was marred by massive invasions and
migrations. Wars are prevalent during this time. As such, great technology

was needed in the fields of weaponry, navigation, food and farm
production and health. The wars have resulted to population decline.
However, in the later part of this period, there was significant increase in
population. Trade and commerce among nations increased, whichb
resulted in greater demands for transportation technology. Sokme of the
most innovative minds came from this period.

The booming world population during the nineteenth century onwards
demanded that more goods be produced at faster rate. People needed
efficient means of transportation to trade more goods and cover a larger
distance. Machines that required animals to operate must thus be

upgraded. Faster and easier means to communicate and compute should
be developed to established connections beetween and among the nations.
All this needs resulted in the development of industries. However, due to
massive industrialization, the modern times again faced more complicated
problems. Food processing and medicine posed some of the bigger

challenges since health was a great concern.

Inventions, such as new tools, devices, processes, and medicines, have provided significant
benefits to society. Inventions help people around the world live longer, healthier, and
more-productive lives and provide new ways to build, move, communicate, heal, learn, and
play.
Assignment
*Society has always been impacted by technology. Each invention has affected
how people relate to one another and how cultures have expanded or ended.
Technology impacts how cities grow, where people live, and who owns what.
Technologies are the reason a few people are very rich, that people are more
social, and that teaching and learning is changing. We are at a crucial time in
history where educators can make a difference in how our students interact with
one another and make a place for themselves in society.
