File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

FTP is a protocol that allows users to transfer files between systems. It was first developed in the late 1970s by several companies and standardized in 1971 as RFC 114. FTP works by installing software on both the sending and receiving machines and then transferring files one by one, with confirmation messages sent for each file. It has advantages like unlimited use, anytime access, and easy file transferring, though it also has disadvantages like only working on some systems and using different transfer modes. Overall, FTP is a very popular and convenient way to transfer files.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
 FTP is a software which allows every user to install and transfer files or folders from
one system to the other. It also works in a similar way as HTTP for transferring Web
pages from a server to a user browser. File Transfer protocol is mostly used for
downloading a file from a server and then is uploaded as a Web page file.

 The governing body that owns the term FTP, apache defines it as any sending or
receiving directories which are located into the following path /httpdocs/publications,
it is based on transferring files from one place to another.

 The way File Transfer Protocol works is by installing the software first on both
machines and then simply taking files one by one and shift them. The software for FTP
can be bought or downloaded form the web browser, however the requirements are a
bit different. As soon as one file is received, the system confirms it by sending a
confirmation message to the system next to it.

Governing Standards Body
 Late 1970s and Early 1980s – FTP
was first developed Founding
Companies:
1. Bryant Design
2. Advent Solar, Inc.
3. Digital Produce
4. Lomasoft Corporation
5. Icon Software Corp.
6. 1 Point Solutions

4
History of File Transfer Protocol(FTP)

 In April of 1971 the first FTP standard was created which was RFC 114. It was invented
before TCP/IP was even invented.

 RFC was taken from the variety of different types of companies using FTP software's

consisted of medical, and other large areas.

 RFC has helped FTP to be available to every company or organization for storage

purposes.

 By means of increasing varieties of different companies using FTP has increased its
liabilities of spreading its easy going technology.

 Once FTP became famous it was used in various places and the purpose of FTP was
well understood. FTP is considered to be the best tool one can use.
5
History of FTP continued….
 FTP had to poise its requirements for a more affluent set
of functionality and with desires for a procedure that was
as simple and easy to execute as possible.

 Professionals were hired to train other individuals on how

to operate FTP on their machines such as to transferring
and receiving files from one place to another.

 It took a while for people to be trained on what FTP does

and what its standards are due to the lack of attention
given.

6
Specifications

 1) to promote sharing of files

 2) to encourage indirect or implicit (via

programs

 3) to shield a user from variations in file

storage systems among hosts

 4) to transfer data reliably and efficiently.

7
Privacy and Security
 anti-virus and double firewall
 Identity/Data
 Contact/Server
 Email Address

8
Interoperability and Support

 Made for Interoperability

 Many public organizations support FTP
Servers

9
Detail of FTP and what it does
 What FTP shows is that, it is a world wide tool in which
it is used all over the world and is highly rated by users.
 FTP shows a few steps on how to take advantage of
transferring personal files such as doc files or other
types of files such as MP3 files.
 In order to Setup an FTP Service one must do the
following:
1. Install FTP software
2. Select file or files which need to be transferred
3. Send file or files by computer networks
4. Final step: File or files start to transfer
10
ADVANTAGES OF FTP

 FTP can be used numerous amounts of time {Unlimited}

 FTP can be used any time of the day

 Files can be transferred without any hassle

 No limit as to how many files or folders can be transferred

 Any type of file or folder can be transferred

 Easy to install on machine

11
Disadvantages of File Transfer Protocol

 Mostly used on Unix and Linux computer

systems

 Not compatible with every system and lacks

support

 ASCII mode and Binary Mode are used and

differ from the way they send data.

12
EXAMPLE OF FTP
Information is secured in folders and can be accessed at any
time.

FTP in General

 File Transfer Protocol is very often used and is

very convenience to use in today’s world. It is a
very accepted way of transferring files for
companies, stores, and even for personal use.

 FTP is designed to pick up information and store

it into a safe place.

 Very useful for people who are used to

transferring files using this technique.
15
Conclusion
 Very Famous for Transferring Files

 FTP has been used for servers for a long time

 It is time saving for every individual because

important information is stored safely.

 Best Rated

 It isn’t compatible for every system except for

Linux and Unix
