3rd Topic and Sentence Outline

The document provides guidelines for outlining topics and sentences. It explains that an outline arranges and develops information in a logical manner. The guidelines discuss formatting such as maintaining a consistent structure within each level of the outline and using parallel grammatical forms for headings. Two main types of outlines are described: topic outlines use words and phrases, while sentence outlines employ complete sentences. Examples of each type of outline are also provided.

TOPIC AND

OUTLINE
OUTLINE
•An outline is a system used to
arrange and develop
information.
Guidelines on Logic and Content
1.The thesis statement contains the
central idea.
- it includes all main ideas of the
outline may be explicitly or implicitly
expressed.
2.The main ideas elaborate the thesis
statement. When joined ,the main ideas could be
used as the thesis statement itself.
- If express explicitly ,main ideas can be copied
from the thesis statement verbatim.
-If implicit, main ideas should be clearly explained
such that they support the thesis statement.
3.The division of the outline should
maintain a single ,similar kind of
relationship.
For example, for each division ,
the first level contains all main topic ,
second level contains all sub-topics,and
third level contains all supporting details,
etc.
4.Each heading clearly separates one
idea from another.

5. Main ideas are ideas of higher

importance that that of subordinate
ideas. Subordinate ideas are of lower
importance.
Guidelines on Form
1.Subdivided main ideas must have at
least two sub-topics.
2.Ideas of the same level and value should
be of the same code (alpa or
numeric ,etc.) and should be in the same
set or indention
3.All headings and ideas should be
parallel in structure, either
words,phrases,clauses ,etc.

4. The thesis statement always precedes the

outline.
=TYPES OF OUTLINE=
1. TOPIC OUTLINE
-The topic outline uses words and
phrases to arrange main and sub –ideas in
a desired sequence to develop the
relationship of these ideas, and to support
the thesis statement.
2. SENTENCE OUTLINE
-The sentence outline uses sentences to
arrange main and sub-ideas in a desired
sequence ,to develop the relationship of
these ideas, and to support the thesis
statement.
