Lesson - Introduction To Clutch System

The document provides information about a technical school's lesson on clutch systems. It discusses the function of clutches as a system that engages and disengages power transmission between the engine and transmission. It identifies two main types of clutches - diaphragm clutches used for light duty and coil spring clutches for heavy duty. It also classifies clutches into friction, cone, single plate, and multiplate varieties and describes their basic designs and applications.

LESSON 1:
Introduction to Clutch System
What is clutch
system?
What is Clutch System?
The clutch is a system that engage and
disengage the power transmit from the engine to
the transmission by pedal operation during gear
shifting. The clutch is located between the engine
flywheel and the transmission/transaxle.
What is clutch?
What is Clutch?
Clutch is a device to connect driving and
driven shafts of a machine, where the driven shaft
can be disconnected almost instantaneously from
the driving shafts as desired by the operator or
driver.
Function
of the
Clutch
Function of the Clutch
1. It can be disengaged (clutch
pedal down). This allows engine
cranking and permits the engine
to run freely without delivering
power to the transmission.
Function of the Clutch
2. While disengaged (clutch pedal
down), it permits the driver to shift
the transmission into various gears.
This allows the driver to select the
proper gear (first, second, third,
fourth, fifth, reverse and neutral) for
the operating condition.
Function of the Clutch
3. While engaging (clutch pedal
moving up), the clutch slips
momentarily. This provides
smooth engagement and lessens
the shock on gears, shafts and
other drive train parts.
Function of the Clutch
3. As the engine develops enough
torque to overcome the inertia
of the vehicle, the drive wheels
turn and the vehicle begins to
move.
Function of the Clutch
4. When engaged (clutch pedal
up), the clutch transmits power
from the engine to the
transmission. All slipping has
stopped.
Requirements
of
Clutch
Requirements of Clutch
1. Torque transmission 7. Inertia
2. Gradual engagement 8. Ease of
3. Heat dissipation operation
4. Dynamic balancing
5. Vibration damping
6. Size
1. Torque Transmission
The clutch should be able to transfer the
maximum torque of engine under all conditions.
It usually designed to transmit 125% to 150%
of maximum engine torque power.
2. Gradual Engagement
The clutch should take the drive gradually
without occurrence of sudden jerks.
3. Heat Dissipation
During clutch application large amount of heat is
generated the rubbing surfaces should have sufficient
area and mass to absorb the heat generated.
The design of clutch should ensure proper ventilation
or cooling for adequate dissipation of heat.
4. Dynamic Balancing
This is necessary particularly in high speed
clutches.
5. Vibration Damping
Suitable mechanism should be incorporated
within the clutch to eliminate the noise produced in
transmission/transaxle.
6. Size
The size of clutch must be smallest possible,
so that it occupy minimum amount of space.
7. Inertia
The clutch rotating parts should have
minimum inertia. Otherwise when clutch disc is
released for gear changing, the clutch disc will
keep on spinning.
8. Ease of Operation
The operation of disengaging the clutch should
be easy for driver.
Types of Clutch
Types of Clutch

1. Diaphragm type
2. Coil Spring type
1. Diaphragm type
The diaphragm type is applicable to light duty
operation and is used with most manual transaxles
and in rear-wheel-drive vehicles. A diaphragm
spring supplies the force that holds the friction disc
against the flywheel. The spring has tapered fingers
pointing inward from a solid ring.
2. Coil spring type
They are used for heavy duty application such
as those vehicles used for hauling and cars used for
racing. It has several coil springs set in a circle
between the cover and the pressure plate.
Classification
of
Clutches
Classification of Clutches
1. Friction Clutch
The friction clutches work on the fact that
friction is caused when two rotating discs come
into contact with each other.
2. Cone Clutch
It serves the same purpose as a disk or plate
clutch. However, instead of mating two spinning
disks, the cone clutch uses two conical surfaces to
transmit torque by friction.
3. Single Plate Clutch
The clutch needs three parts that included the
engine flywheel, a clutch/friction disc and a
pressure plate.
In this clutch, the gear changing is easier that
with the cone clutch because the pedal movement
is less in this case.
4. Multiplate Clutch
It is an extension of a single plate type where
the number of frictional and metal plates is
increased.
Increase in number of friction surfaces
obviously increases the capacity of the clutch to
transmit torque.
4. Multiplate Clutch
This type of clutch is used in some heavy
transport vehicles and racing cars where high
torque is to be transmitted.
