Brain Computer Interface

A brain-computer interface allows direct communication between a person's brain and an external device like a computer. Early work on BCIs began in the 1970s with research on using brain signals to control prosthetics or allow disabled individuals to communicate. Modern BCIs translate brain waves into commands to operate devices or programs, helping paralyzed people control prosthetics or allowing sensory experiences for blind or deaf individuals. While BCIs aim to enhance capabilities, the technology is still limited and research remains at an early stage.

DEFINITION

• A brain–computer interface (BCI), sometimes called a brain–machine interface (BMI), is

a direct communication pathway between the brain’s electrical activity and an external
device, most commonly a computer or robotic limb
EARLY WORK

• Research on BCIs began in the 1970s by Jacques Vidal at the University of California,
Los Angeles (UCLA) under a grant from the National Science Foundation, followed by a
contract from DARPA.[3][4] The Vidal’s 1973 paper marks the first appearance of the
expression brain–computer interface in scientific literature.
IMPLEMENTATION

• Brain-computer interface (BCI) speller is a system that provides an alternative

communication for the disable people. The brain wave is translated into machine
command through a BCI speller which can be used as a communication medium for the
patients to express their thought without any motor movement.
• A BCI speller aims to spell characters by using the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal.
INTERFACE

Brain Computer Interface Working

• A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a computer-based system that acquires brain signals,
analyzes them, and translates them into commands that are relayed to an output device to
carry out a desired action. In principle, any type of brain signal could be used to control a
BCI system.
Advantages of Brain Computer Interface:

➨It allows paralyzed people to control the prosthetic limbs with their mind.
• ➨Transmit visual images to the mind of a blind person which allows them to see.

• ➨Transmit auditory data to the mind of a deaf person which allows them to hear.
• ➨It allows gamers to control the video games with their minds.

Disadvantages of Brain Computer Interface:

➨Electrodes outside of the skull can detect very few electric signals from the brain.
➨Electrodes placed inside teh skull create scar tissue in the brain.
➨The present BCI technology is crude.
• ➨BCI research is still at initial stages and not at matured stage.
