Cylinder Pyramid Cones

The document discusses different geometric shapes including cylinders, pyramids, cones, prisms and parallelepipeds. It provides definitions and properties of each shape as well as formulas to calculate values like volume, surface area, lateral area and more. Examples are given to demonstrate how to apply the formulas to solve word problems involving these geometric objects.

CYLINDER

By: Ms. Catherine Joyce T. Lavado, LPT

Cylinder
• A cylinder is a solid
bounded by a closed
cylindrical surface and two
parallel planes.
Properties of Cylinder
• The bounding cylindrical surface
of a cylinder is called lateral
surface, and the two bounding
planes are called bases.
• The bases of a cylinder are equal.
• The altitude of a cylinder is the
perpendicular distance between
the bases.
• Every section of a cylinder
parallel to the base has an area
equal to that of the base
Cylinder Formulas
Let r = radius, h = height

Volume (V) = h
Lateral Area (LA) = h
Total Surface Area (TSA) = h + 2

PYRAMID
By: Ms. Catherine Joyce T. Lavado, LPT
Pyramid
• This is a polyhedron of
which one face, called the
base, is a polygon of any
number of sides and other
faces are triangles which
have a common vertex
(apex).
Properties of Pyramid
• The triangular faces are lateral
faces.
• The altitude of a pyramid is the
length of the perpendicular
dropped from the vertex to the
plane of then base.
Regular Right Pyramid
• This is one whose base is a
regular polygon whose
center coincides with the
foot of the perpendicular
dropped from the vertex to
the base.
Properties of Regular
Right Pyramid
• The lateral edges of a regular
pyramid are equal.
• The lateral faces of a regular
pyramid are congruent isosceles
triangle.
• The altitudes of the lateral faces
of a regular pyramid are equal.
• The slant height of a regular
pyramid is the altitude of the
lateral face.
Pyramid Formulas

Volume (V) =1/3 area of the base x altitude

Volume (V) = 1/3 Bh

Lateral Area (LA) = Sum of Areas of the of the lateral

faces
TSA = LSA + Area of the base
Find the total surface area and volume of the regular
square pyramid shown.

Formula: TSA = LSA + Area of the base

TSA = LSA + Area of the base

TSA = 4 ((30) (39)) + (30)
TSA = 3240

Formula: Volume (V) = 1/3 Bh Note: To get the volume, we need to get first the height

CONES
By: Ms. Catherine Joyce T. Lavado, LPT
Cones
• This is a solid bounded by a conical
surface (lateral surface) and a plane
(base) which cuts all the elements.

Properties of Cones
• The altitude of a cone is the perpendicular distance
from the vertex to the plane of the base.
• The axis of a cone is the straight line joining vertex
with the center of the base.
• A right section of a cone is a section perpendicular to
its axis and cutting all the elements.
