Hardware, Software

This document discusses the differences between hardware and software. It defines hardware as the mechanical and electronic devices that make up a computer, such as the CPU, keyboard, and mouse. Software is defined as a set of instructions and programs that manages the hardware and extends its capabilities. The document outlines the main components of hardware, including input/output devices, and describes system software and application software. It concludes by summarizing the key differences between hardware and software in terms of dependence on each other, visibility, lifespan, expense type, reliability, and examples of types.

AND ITS DIFFERENCES

Hardware- mechanical device that makes up a
computer.
- Computer hardware consists of interconnected
electronic devices.
- Controls computer operation, input and output.
- Ex- CPU, keyboard, mouse etc.

- Computer hardware is a collection of several components
working together.
- Some parts are essential, others are added advantages
- Comp hardware- made up of CPU and peripherals .

SOFTWARE
 A set of instructions is called program and a set of programs and procedure
 the soul of the computer system
 which manages the hardware components of the computer and extends its
processing capabilities.
 communicates with the hardware by organizing the control sequence, so that,
the hardware carries out the defined instructions
SYSTEM SOFTWARE
A set of programs designed for controlling, integrating and managing
the hardware components of a computer system and to extend its
processing capabilities.
The system software in general performs the following functions :
(a)Supports development of application software by providing
a programming environment
(b)acts as an interface between the hardware of the computer
and the software applications.
(c)governs and ensures the effective use of various hardware
resources
The following are the examples of
(d) controls the operations of peripheral devices like printers, system software :
speakers, etc. (1) Operating System (OS)
(2) Programming languages
(e) supports the execution of various application softwares (3) Language translators
installed on the system. (4) Linkers
(5) System utilities.
APPLICATION SOFTWARE
 Set of programs designed to do some
specific jobs
 consists of programs which direct
computers to perform specific
activities for the users. Most commonly used application software-
1. Word Processing Software
 generally developed using system
2. Spreadsheet Software
softwares
3. Presentation Software
 Ex- enterprise software, accounting 4. Multimedia Software
software, media players, office suits 5. Enterprise software
etc.
DIFFERENCE
S.no. Basis Hardware Software
1. Dependence To start functioning, To execute instructions
requires the software to be provided, software needs to be
loaded installed on hardware
2. Visibility Physical device, can be Set of programs, cannot be
touched and seen seen or touched

3. Life Wears out over time Does not wear out because
doesn't have any physical
component
4. Expense type Except for upgrades, is a Continuous expense
one time expense
5. Reliability Steady level of reliance Needs to be tested at every
step upgrade
6. Types Keyboard, mouse, CPU, System softwares and
printers etc. application softwares
