Pie Charts

This document provides instructions for creating a pie chart. It gives an example of a survey where people were asked their favorite fast food restaurant. The data obtained was KFC (41), McDonald's (72), Burger King (25), Pizza Hut (56). To make the pie chart: total the frequencies to get the whole (194); calculate the fraction of each part out of the whole; multiply the fraction by 360 to get the angle in degrees for each section; draw the pie chart with labeled sections proportional to the calculated angles. It also provides an exam question example of using a pie chart to display data on how money is spent and determining an unknown total amount.

Pie Charts 17/07/23

We’ll start by learning how to draw a Pie Chart.

Example – Some people were asked what is their favourite fast food restaurant.
This is the data that was obtained. Put this data in a Pie Chart.

Restaurant Frequency Fraction Angle Start by adding up the frequencies

to obtain a total
KFC 41 X360 760
McDonalds 72 X360 1340 What fraction of the whole Pie
Chart would each restaurant be?
Burger King 25 X360 460
Pizza Hut 56 x360 1040 There are 3600 in a circle
Total 194 3600 If we multiply the fraction by 360
We will find our angle.

Exam Question

This is an easier question!

Part (a) is easy to see!

Part (b) we can see that

transport is a right angle,
which is ¼ of the circle!

Rent and bills

£1280
If ¼ was spent on transport and this is £320
The total must be 4 times this amount.
