Special Constructional Feature
Poles & Field Coils

 The main poles are built from sheet steel laminations


riveted together whereas interpole is machined from
high permeability steel.
 The main field coils are with copper strap flat wound,
whereas the interpole coils are edge wound .
 Coils are insulated with Mica based class H insulation
system and are vacuum and pressure impregnated.
 The pole bolt heads are sealed with a compound to
prevent water entry.
 All internal electrical connections are effectively
secured to prevent movement and loosening in
service.
Special Constructional Feature
Brush Gear

 Split carbon brushes with rubber tops are used for better
commutation.
 Brush holders are secured to the magnet frame by micalex
insulated pins.
 A PTFE insulator mounted on the support pin provides a creepage
surface that is very easy to clean.
 The radial distance of the brush holder from the commutator and
brush spring tensions can be adjusted .
 Arcing ring is provided to minimize the damage in the event of
flashover.

Armature
 The varnished electrical sheet steel punchings.
 Shaft is machined from Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum
steel to BS 970,grade EMN25V.
 Two rows of ventilating ducts are provided for effective
cooling.
 The commutator is made of silver bearing copper
segments.
 The coils are held down in the core slots with epoxy
glass wedges.
 Res-I-glass tape is used to retain the end windings.
 The armature is vacuum and pressure impregnated with
high quality solventless polyester varnish.
 The armature is dynamically balanced.

Special Constructional Feature
Armature Bearing Assembly

 The armature is supported on two grease lubricated roller


bearings.
 The bearing on the commutator end acts as locating bearing
while the pinion end bearing takes care of any differentials
between the armature and frame.
 Both the bearing arrangement are fully sealed thereby
necessitating lubrication only once in about 3 years or so.
 The sealed bearing arrangement also prevents bearing
lubricants passing into the machine or getting contaminated
with gear lubricant or other foreign material.
SPECIAL FEATURES
 230 Volts, 225 watts single phase space heater to control internal
humidity.

 Frame mounts cut-out switch to isolate the motor during servicing /


repairs.

 Plug-in type connections for power and control cables.

 Bottom cable entry.

 Pressurized enclosure for operation in hazardous area.

 Standard drive hub, shrink fitted on tapered seating over shaft


extension.

APPLICATION

The oil rig alternator type OA7001AY / OA6301AY is a brushless


type having two bearing construction. The excitation current is
supplied from a directly connected brushless rotating AC exciter
and rotating diode wheel.

SALIENT FEATURES
 Class H insulation for both stator and rotor with temp.
rise as per IEC-349-1991 minus 30 deg. C for higher
life of insulation. However, we have already conducted
motorette testing on the insulation system on similar
machines and temp. indices already established.
Earlier insulation of rotor was class ‘F’.

 The stator and rotor is VPIed separately in


polyesterimide varnish (of 180 deg. C class) for higher
temperature withstand capability .

 The exciter stator is mounted on the end shield which


is spigoted on the flange of the frame for better
location and adjustment of air gap.
 CAD facilities used for optimizing the design to
establish electrical parameters .

 Stator punching assembly is in capsule construction


(OA7001AY & OA6301AY) pushed into stator
frame for obtaining better rigidity of stator
assembly based on Siemens technology.

 Stator and rotor are finally painted with silicone


based high tracking index insulating paint, which is
inhouse development of BHEL.

TYPE OA7002AZ
INTRODUCTION
 BHEL has designed, developed, manufactured and successfully
tested brushless alternator type OA7002AZ for oil rig
application for M/S ONGC.

 M/s ONGC and other oil sectors require high rated brushless
alternators to cater for various load conditions of drilling
operation of oil well during critical drilling, deep drilling and
angular drilling. It has been noticed that during these conditions
due to alternator operation at very low power factor, high
reactive power is required.

 Also, since oil rig wells are normally located at far remote places,
alternators are also to be designed with self start without any
field flushing at site. The existing alternators used for oil rig
application are rated for 1215 kVA, 1000 RPM and it was felt
that the residual voltage generated by the alternator is
insufficient for self starting of alternator at site. Now with the
development of newly designed brushless alternator of 1430
kVA, 1000 RPM rating all the above limitations shall be
contained.
