Input and output

hello!
Pranish raj Tuladhar
Sanskar Kayasta
We are here to talk about Input and output devices.

INPUT DEVICES
Let’s start with the first set of slides

3
INTRODUCTION
✘ Input and output devices enables people to communicate with
computers
✘ Input devices can also be used to convey instructions to the computer,
as well as to input data in a variety of formats.
✘ Any hardware components that allow the user to
enter data, programs, commands, and user
response to a computer.
✘ Its process of data entry and translating it into
machine readable form.

4
POINTING DEVICES
The mouse pointing device sits on
your work surface and is moved with
your hand
input devices Allow the user to control the pointer
on the screen
Send singnals to computer
Instructs the mouse pointer on the
screen to move accordingly.

5
POINTING DEVICES
An electronic pen is a pointing device that is used as
an alternative to a mouse to select objects, draws, or
write electronically on the screen

The trackball is a variation of the mechanical mouse. User

may have used a trackball to play a video game. The
trackball is like an upside down mechanical mouse and user
need roll the ball directly with their hand. Buttons are
mounted alongside or below the ball
6
POINTING DEVICES
A touch screen monitor is used to input and receive
information from a single peripheral device, usually
a laptop touch screen monitor. So, when using a
touch screen monitor, users do not have to use a
keyboard or mouse.

A joystick which looks similar to a car’s gearshift, is most

often used with computer games. The direction the joystick
moves controls on an onscreen object. Buttons on the
joystick are usually assigned with functions by the program
being used, such as jumping or firing a weapon.
7
SCANNING DEVICES
Capture data directly from the source
document
The input process becomes more
input devices efficient because manual data is
eliminated.

8
SCANNING DEVICE
Handheld scanners are useful for capturing short newspaper
or magazine articles, as well as Web addresses, names, and
telephone numbers. flash memory to store up to 2,000 pages
of text and can transfer stored data to a handheld or desktop
PC via a serial or infrared (IrDA) connection

A sheetfed scanner works similarly to a flatbed scanner, but

documents are inserted into the top of the scanner instead,
similar to a fax machine. This design reduces the scanner’s
cost and the amount of desk space required.

9
SCANNING DEVICE
A flatbed scanner is designed to scan flat objects
one page at a time. scanned remains stationary
while the scanning mechanism moves underneath it
to capture the image.

A drum scanner is much more expensive and more difficult to

operate than the other types of scanners.
When a drum scanner is used, the documents to be scanned
are mounted on a glass cylinder, which is then rotated at high
speeds around a sensor located inside the scan
10
IMAGE CAPTURE
Image Capture is an application
program that enables users to upload
pictures from digital cameras, videos
input devices or scanners which are either connected
directly to the computer or the network
Receive the picture as it is and through
a conversion process, downloads it
onto the computer

11
DIGITISING
Digitisation or digitising is the process of
converting information into a digital format
Discretisation Reading an analog signal A, and, at
regular time intervals (sampling frequency),
sampling the value of the signal at the point. Each
input devices
such reading is called a sample, and may be
considered infinite precision at this stage.
Quantisation These samples are then rounded to a
fixed set of numbers (such as integers), which is
called quantisation

12
AUDIO DEVICES
Recording music, specch or sound
effect, speech recognition.

13
OUTPUT
✘ Output is the process of translating data that are in machine
readable form into a form understandable to humans or
readable by other machines. The information that is the
result of processing is also often referred to as output
✘ Two types of output:
• Output that is read and used by people (hard copy and soft
copy)
• Data that are sent to secondary storage devices to be used
later as input for further processing by a computer or for use
by another machine.
14
OUTPUT DEVICES
✘ An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment which converts
information into a human-perceptible form or, historically, into a physical machine-
readable form for use with other non-computerized equipment. It can
be text, graphics, tactile, audio, or video.

15
Hardcopy output device
Printer
a printer is a peripheral machine which makes a persistent
representation of graphics or text, usually on paper

types of printers:
• Laser Printers: A laser printer is a popular type of
computer printer that uses a non-impact photocopier
technology where there are no keys striking the paper.

16
Hardcopy output device
LED Printers: LED printers are most similar to laser
printers, using a drum, toner, and fuser system to apply
colored or black toner to paper.

• Inkjet Printers: An inkjet printer is a computer peripheral that

produces hard copies of a text document or photo by spraying
droplets of ink onto paper.

• Multifunction Printers: A multifunction printer (MFP) is a piece

of office equipment that serves as the centralized hub where all
printing, copying, faxing, and scanning occurs.
17
Hardcopy output device
Dot Matrix Printers: A dot matrix printer is an impact
printer that prints using a fixed number of pins or wires.
Typically, the pins or wires are arranged in one or several
vertical columns. The pins strike an ink-coated ribbon and
force contact between the ribbon and the paper, so that
each pin makes a small dot on the paper.

18
Display output device
CRT monitor: CRT monitors are based on the cathode ray tubes.
They are like vacuum tubes which produce images in the form of
video signals. Cathode rays tube produces a beam of electrons
through electron guns that strike on the inner phosphorescent
surface of the screen to produce images on the screen.
Flat panel displays:  A flat panel display is a television, monitor
or other display appliance that uses a thin panel design instead of
a traditional cathode ray tube (CRT) design. These screens are
much lighter and thinner, and can be much more portable than
traditional televisions and monitors.

19
Display output device
Smart displays: Smart displays (sometimes called wireless
monitors) are portable monitors that are wirelessly
connected to a desktop PC so they can remotely access that
PC from anywhere within a home or office.
HDTV monitors: HDTV (high-definition television) is a
new type of television technology that supports high
resolution, digital broadcast signals. HDTV monitors are
capable of receiving HDTV broadcasts, as well as
displaying computer images. Because HDTV monitors
have up to three times more pixels than analog TVs.

20
Sound Output Devices
Speaker:  A computer speaker is an output hardware
device that connects to a computer to generate sound. The
signal used to produce the sound that comes from a
computer speaker is created by the computer's sound card.

Headphones: Sometimes referred to as earphones,

headphones are a hardware output device that plug into a
computer line out or speaker’s port. Headphones allow you
to listen to audio or watch a movie without disturbing
people around you.
