Ammonia Stripper & Scrubber System

This document describes an ammonia stripper and scrubber system used to remove ammonia and VOCs from effluent. Key points: 1. The system uses a packed column stripper to strip ammonia from partially treated effluent using recirculated treated gases. 2. Stripped gases enter a packed column scrubber where sulphuric acid absorbs the ammonia to form ammonium sulphate. 3. Scrubbed gases pass through activated carbon filters to remove remaining VOCs before being emitted through a chimney.

AMMONIA STRIPPER &

SCRUBBER SYSTEM
A COUPLING SYSTEM
FACTS ABOUT AIR STRIPPER
• Air/gas stripping is a process used to remove VOCs/certain SVOCs,
including ammonia from effluent.
• It is an example of a liquid-gas contactor.
• There are two types of technologies, tray and packed column.
• The packed column is the most efficient and being used in this system.
• Due to the packed column stripper has the same package with the
packed column scrubber, including, spray nozzle, demister, and
packing bed, it will be declared as the scrubber, but with different
function.
THE PRINCIPLE OF AMMONIA
STRIPPER
1. The partially treated effluent is coming from Liquid Gas
ammonia stripper feed tank to be deposited into
the spray nozzle of ammonia stripper. 3
2. The treated gases from the ammonia scrubber (Untreated ammonia)
fan are recirculated to ventilate at the bottom of 1
ammonia stripper.
(Partially treated effluent)
3. The ammonia in effluent is releasable as its
solubility is decreased, so when the gases
interface with the effluent during the process,
the ammonia turns into the gas by desorption. (Q-pac)

4. The stripped effluent at the bottom of ammonia

stripper is transferred to the stage-2 biological
treatment system for further treatment.

FACTS ABOUT WET SCRUBBER
• As one of the air pollution control systems (APCS) for removing the
contaminated gas in industry.
• The most common types are packed column, tray, cyclone, orifice,
and venturi.
• Packed column is very efficient in this system to remove ammonia in
the gas stream.
• The scrubbing liquid determination is also the main factor to
scrub/react/absorb with the contaminants.
THE PRINCIPLE OF AMMONIA
SCRUBBER
1. The sulphuric acid and fresh water are pumped Gas Liquid

into ammonia scrubber.

Treated gases
2. The stripped ammonia from the ammonia (Scrubbed ammonia, VOCs, & air)
stripper, along with VOCs and air, are ventilated
3
at the bottom of ammonia scrubber.
(Sulphuric acid & water)
3. When the scrubbing liquid interfaces with the 1
contaminated gases, it is selectively absorbed the
ammonia to the liquid phase.
4. The ammonium sulphate can be reused by
(Q-pac)
recirculation line in the scrubber, but if there is
high differential pressure/increase in density, it 2
will be transferred to the ammonium sulphate (Stripped ammonia, 4
storage tank and disposed by truck weekly. VOCs, & air)
(Ammonium sulphate)
FACTS ABOUT CARBON FILTER
• As one of the air pollution control systems (APCS) for removing the
contaminated gas in industry.
• The carbon filter is provided in this system effectively to filter out the
VOCs.
• The filter material used in this system is granular activated carbon.
• The activated carbon captures the VOCs by adsorption.
• Due to its non-generative adsorption process, the spent carbon bed
must regularly maintain and replace once exhausted.
