Networking Hardware

This document provides an introduction to basic networking hardware. It describes common networking devices including network interface cards (NICs), hubs, switches, modems, and routers. NICs connect computers to networks and have a unique ID. Hubs connect multiple wires but cannot filter data. Switches can selectively forward packets to the correct port. Modems convert digital signals to analog for telephone line transmission. Routers connect different networks, such as a home network to the internet.

Networking
Hardware
Network hardware is defined as a set of physical or
network devices that are essential for interaction and
communication between hardware units operational
on a computer network.

• Types of networking devices:

• ■ Hub ■ Switch
• ■ Router ■ Bridge
• ■ Gateway ■ Modem
• ■ Repeater ■ Wireless Access Point

(NIC)
Network Interface Card
(NIC)
NIC or network interface card is a network adapter that is
used to connect the computer to the network. It is installed
in the computer to establish a LAN.  It has a unique id that
is written on the chip, and it has a connector to connect the
cable to it. The cable acts as an interface between the
computer and the router or modem.

Network cards are of two types:

1. Internal network cards
2. External network cards

Hub
HUB
A hub is a basically multi-port repeater. A hub connects multiple
wires coming from different branches, for example, the connector in
star topology which connects different stations. Hubs cannot filter
data, so data packets are sent to all connected devices.

Switch
SWITCH
A switch is a multiport bridge with a buffer and a design that can boost its
efficiency(a large number of ports imply less traffic) and performance. A
switch is a data link layer device. The switch can perform error checking
before forwarding data, which makes it very efficient as it does not forward
packets that have errors and forward good packets selectively to the correct
port only.  In other words, the switch divides the collision domain of hosts,
but the broadcast domain remains the same.

Modem
Modem
A modem enables a computer to connect to the internet via
a telephone line. The modem at one end converts the
computer’s digital signals into analog signals and sends
them through a telephone line. At the other end, it converts
the analog signals to digital signals that are understandable
for another computer.

Router
Router
A router connects two or more networks. One common use
of the router is to connect a home or office network (LAN)
to the internet (WAN). It generally has a plugged-in internet
cable along with cables that connect computers on the
LAN. Alternatively, a LAN connection can also be wireless
(Wi-Fi-enabled), making the network device wireless.
These are also referred to as wireless access points (WAPs).
