How Do We Try to Understand Life?

Reductionism = attempt to define a phenomena by studying the smaller parts of it

Emergent Properties = characteristics of a phenomena that only arise at more complex levels of organization

Both the Big and Small Pictures can be Studied by First Developing.

Model = a simplified view of how the components of a structure or process operate

Hypotheses = an informed guess about the way a process works or a structure is organized

Start by Making Observations

Formation of a Model

+/-

Makes Predictions that can be Tested by Experiment (Hypotheses)

Suggests How Other Similar Processes Work

Observations Alone are Not Enough !

How Do We Evaluate Experiments That Give Varying Results?

Statistics = science of collecting and analyzing numerical data Data set #1 8 10 12 Data set #2 11 14 15

Are the results from these two sets of experiments statistically different???

Theory
A broad system of statements and ideas that explain a group of facts or phenomena

Lots of experiments that have consistently upheld a series of related hypotheses

Scientific Method
Formulate a Hypotheses

Test the Hypotheses

Develop a Theory

Lets Design an Experiment ...
