Swingin Monkeys Dividing Decimals

This document provides steps for dividing decimals using a "Swingin' Monkeys" analogy. It explains that to divide decimals: 1. Move the decimal point in the divisor to the right to make it a whole number, which is like the "outside monkey swinging." Then the "inside monkey" also swings the same amount. 2. Move the decimal in the dividend the same amount to the right. 3. Put the decimal in the answer over the decimal in the dividend. 4. Divide as usual, keeping the decimals lined up. Moving the decimal effectively multiplies or divides the number by a power of 10. Practice problems are provided to apply the steps.

Steps in Dividing Decimals

1. Make the divisor (outside number) a whole number by

moving (swingin’) the decimal to the right as many places as
it takes to make it a WHOLE NUMBER.

2. In MONKEY TERMS: Whatever the outside monkey does

(how far it swings) the inside monkey does also. Then the
monkey climbs up and sits on the roof!
