A health and safety policy is a business plan required by law to ensure safety in the workplace. An effective policy has underlying beliefs that continuous safety improvement is a shared responsibility, preserving resources minimizes costs, and good safety equals good productivity and quality. It also believes all accidents are preventable. A policy layout includes a statement of commitment to safety, defines roles and responsibilities, and describes how the policy will be implemented.
