This document introduces angles of elevation and depression through examples and activities. It defines key terms like line of sight and discusses how to calculate missing angles and distances using trigonometric ratios. Example problems are given to find heights or distances based on a known angle of elevation or depression. A group activity challenges students to solve problems and fold paper triangles based on correct answers to determine a winner. Students are assigned to provide real-world examples of elevation and depression angles through illustrations.

ANGLE OF
ELEVATION AND
ANGLE OF
DEPRESSION
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson the learners are able
to:
a. Define and differentiate angles of elevation and
angles of depression;
b. Illustrate and solve problems involving angle
of elevation and angle of depression confidently;
and
c. Appreciate and understand the relationship of
angle of elevation and angle of depression in
real-life situation.
Line of sight
is an
imaginary line
that connects
the eye of an
observer to
the object
being
observed.
Angle of Elevation
The angle of
elevation is the angle
between horizontal
line of sight and the
line of sight up to an
object.
OBSERVER
Angle of Depression
Angle of depression
is the downwards
angle from the
horizontal line to a
line of sight from the
observer to some point
of interest.

1. From point 80 m from the base of a
tower, the angle of elevation to the top of
the tower is 28º.
2. A kite is flying at an angle of elevation of
about 55º.
3. A man in a hot air balloon 20, 000 ft. in
the air sees a tree below at an angle of
depression of 11º.
SOLVING PROBLEMS
INVOLVING ANGLES
OF ELEVATION AND
ANGLES OF
DEPRESSION
Example 1.

A nursery plants a new tree and attaches a guy wire
to help support the tree white its roots take hold.
An eight-foot wire is attached to the tree and to a
stake on the ground. From the stake on the ground
the angle of elevation on the connection with the
tree is 42º. Find to the nearest tenth of a foot, the
height of the connection point on the tree.
x 8

42°
Solution
Step 1. Identify the Step 2. Identify the
given trigonometric ratio to be
use.
Given:
Angle = 42º SOH or sin =
Hypotenuse = 8
Opposite = x
Step 3. Substitute and
solve for the missing part.
sin =

sin 42º = 8
5.35
x = 8(sin 42º)
x = 5.35 42°
Example 2.
Find the shadow cast by a 10
cm foot lamp post when the
angle of elevation of the sun is
58º. Find the length to the
nearest tenth of a foot.

x
Solution
Step 1. Identify the Step 2. Identify the
given trigonometric ratio to
be use.
Given:
Angle = 58º TOA or tan =
Opposite = 10
Adjacent = x
Step 3. Substitute and
solve for the missing part.
tan =

tan 58º = 10

x=
58°
x = 6.25 6.25
Example 3. You are hiking and come to a cliff at
the edge of a ravine. In the distance you can see
your campsite at the base of a cliff, on the other
side of the ravine. You know that the distance
across the ravine is 500 meters, and the angle
between your horizontal line of sight and your
campsite is 25º. How high is the cliff? (Assume
that you are five feet tall)
25°

500 m
x

25° 500 m
Solution
Step 1. Identify the Step 2. Identify the
given trigonometric ratio to
be use.
Given:
Angle = 25º TOA or tan =
Adjacent = 500
Opposite = x
Step 3. Substitute and
solve for the missing part.
tan = To get the height of
the ravine:
tan 25º =
233.16 – 5
x = 500 (tan 25º)

x = 233.16 m 228.16
Activity: Fold your Triangle!
Direction: Each group will be given a triangular
shape of cartolina with the same sizes. There are set
of problems that you need to solve, for every wrong
answer of a group you will fold your triangle, on the
other hand when you got the correct answer your
triangle will stay as it is. Same process for every
problem until it finishes. The group that has the
bigger triangle will be the winner and will receive
an award.
