Functions 1

The document defines and provides examples of even and odd functions. Even functions satisfy f(-x) = f(x), meaning the function is symmetric with respect to the y-axis. Odd functions satisfy f(-x) = -f(x), meaning the function is symmetric with respect to the origin. Examples of an even function f(x)=x^2 and an odd function f(x)=x^3 are provided, along with their graphs to illustrate symmetry. The document also discusses verifying even and odd functions algebraically by replacing x with -x and comparing the original and new functions. Finally, it provides examples of determining if functions are increasing, decreasing, or constant over different intervals.

EVEN FUNCTIONS

Algebraically: f(-x) = f(x) for all x in the domain of f.

This means you take the function and plug in –x for x.

If you end up with the original equation, it is an even function or
symmetric with respect to the y-axis.

ODD FUNCTIONS
Algebraically: f(-x) = -f(x) for all x in the domain of f.

This means you take the function and plug in –x for x.

If you end up with the original equation but with negative sign, it is an odd
function or symmetric on opposite side with respect to the origin.

Verifying Algebraically….
 Copy the original function
 Replace for every variable
 Simplify the function
 Compare to the original to determine its
symmetry
 Make a concluding statement with an algebraic
statement to support it.
