Operating SYSTEMS

Operating systems enable computers to function by allowing users to communicate with and control the computer. They perform important tasks like maintaining security, handling errors, and controlling input/output. There are several types of user interfaces including command line interfaces, graphical user interfaces, dialogue-based interfaces, and gesture-based interfaces. Command line interfaces require typing commands while graphical user interfaces use icons, windows, and pointing devices like mice. Dialogue and gesture-based interfaces use voice commands and hand movements respectively to interact with devices.

OPERATING

SYSTEMS
MARYAM, SABRINA, ALIA & AYRA
OPERATING SYSTEMS (OS)

• Enables computers to function

• Allow users to communicate with OS, or known
as software
TASKS

• Maintaining the Security of the

Computer System
• Dealing with Errors in Application
Programs
• Controls the Operation of Input,
output & Backing Up Storage
Etc…
User Interfaces (comp system)

• Command line interface (CLI)

• Graphical user interface (GUI)
• Dialogue-based user interface
• Gesture-based user interface
CLI
Requires a user to put instructions to choose options from menus,
software etc

Number of commands are used to carry out basic operations (saving a

file, loading a file etc)

Advantage & Disadvantage

Disadvantage: It is slow and every time the user has to type out a
command.

Advantage: The computer is in direct communication with the

computer
GUI
ALLOWS USER TO INTERACT WITH DEVICE USING SYMBOLS
AND PICTURES (ICONS) INSTEAD OF NUMBER of COMMANDS

WIMP (WINDOWS INCONS MENU AND POINTING DEVICE) - MOST

COMMON GUI BASED TECH. USED FOR PCs. A MOUSE IS USED TO
SELECT AN ICON TO RUN WINDOW THAT CONTAINS AN
APPLICATION.
Advantage & Disadvantage
Disadvantage: Takes up more
computer memory, limited to
icons & runs the command
slower
Advantage: User don’t have to
Touch screen smartphones and tablets use post-WIMP interaction, where
fingers are in contact with the screen allowing actions (pinching and rotating).

• CLI: A programmer; basically, somebody who needs to have direct

communication with a computer to develop new software.
• GUI: The end-user who does not have to have any great knowledge of
computers. Example: A person who uses the computer to run software.
Dialogue-based user interface
Use human voice to give commands to computer systems

Example: modern cars: BMW

Or Alexa, Siri and Google

Advantage & Disadvantage

Disadvantage: still unreliable; many commands not recognized.

Complex to set up.
Advantage: Non need for driver to take hands off steering wheel,
useful for disabled people to just command. Possible use of security
feature (voice recognition)
GESTURE-BASED INTERFACES-
RELIES ON HUMAN INTERACTION BY MOVEMENT AND DOES
NOT REQUIRE ANY MECHANICAL DEVICES.
USES TECHNIQUES LIKE COMPUTER VISION AND IMAGE
PROCESSING.
AN EXAMPLE OF THIS IS ROTATING A FINGER TO INCREASE A
RADIO’S VOLUME
Disadvantage: possible for unintentional movement (accident click),
works fairly only near sensors. Accept limited number of movements.
Advantage: Replaces mechanical input device & no training needed
to interface with computer
