The wavelet transform is a tool for analyzing data that contains features that vary over different scales. It represents a function by wavelets of varying frequency and position. The wavelet transform was introduced by engineers in the 1980s to analyze complex engineering processes, and was later developed by mathematicians. It has applications in signal processing, image processing, data compression, pattern recognition, and financial analysis.

JAWAHARLAL NEHRU UNIVERITY The Wavelet Transform
• Wavelet transforms are mathematical tools for analyzing data
where features vary features can be frequencies varying over time, over different scales. For signals, transients, or slowly varying trends. • A wavelet transform is the representation of a function by wavelets. History of Wavelet • It was introduced by engineers not by mathematicians. • It was introduced by some geophysical engineer Jean Morlet and Alex Grossmaan (physicist) in 1982. • In 1982, they introduced the idea to described complex engineering process. • In 1985, yeus meyer (mathematician) gave the relationship b/w wavelet and Morlet algorithm. • In 1988, Daubechies (Belgium mathematician) introduced an orthonormal wavelet with prescribed degree of smoothness. • Some work had done in this area by cohen in 1992 in bi-orthogonal wavelet. (1) (2) APPLICATIONS 1.Signal processing: Wavelet transforms are used for signal denoising, compression, and feature extraction. They are especially useful for analyzing non-stationary signals. 2.Image processing: Wavelet transforms are used for image denoising, compression, and enhancement. They are especially useful for analyzing images with sharp edges or textures. 3.Data compression: Wavelet transforms can be used for lossless and lossy compression of data. They are especially effective for compressing data with sparsity or self-similarity. 4.Pattern recognition: Wavelet transforms can be used for feature extraction in pattern recognition tasks. They are especially useful for analyzing time-frequency features of signals. 5.Financial analysis: Wavelet transforms can be used for analyzing financial time series data. They are especially useful for identifying trends and cycles in the data.
