Week 2

This document discusses sociocultural development theories including Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory and Vygotsky's sociocultural theory of development. Bronfenbrenner's theory proposes that a child's development is influenced by different environmental systems, including the microsystem of immediate family and peers, the mesosystem of interactions between microsystems, the exosystem of social settings not directly involving the child, and the macrosystem of larger cultural values. Vygotsky's theory posits that social learning precedes development and occurs within a zone of proximal development. The document also notes the teacher's role in facilitating students' sociocultural development in the classroom.

WEEK 9 – 13 JAN 2017

Socioculture and Sociocultural Development in Classroom

• The meaning of Socioculture
• Bronfenbenner Ecological System Theory
• Lev Vygotsky Sociocultural Theory of Development
• Role of the teacher in the sociocultural development
in the classroom
Do you think the world around you have affected your
social relationships?
 How is a child's development affected by his/her social
relationships and the world around them?
  Ecological systems theory provides one approach to
answering this question.
  Urie Bronfenbrenner.
 a person's development is affected by everything in their
surrounding environment.

microsystem mesosytem chronosystem exosystem macrosystem

Microsystem

  the
system closest to the person and the one in
which he / she has direct contact;
 home,
 school,
 daycare,
 or work
 bi-directional.
 Thisis the most influential level of the
ecological systems theory.
Mesosystem
MESOSYSTEM

• The mesosystem consists of the interactions

between the different parts of a person's
microsystem.

• The mesosystem is where a person's individual

microsystems do not function independently, but are
interconnected and assert influence upon one
another.

These interactions have an indirect impact on the

individual.
Exosytem
The exosystem refers to a setting that does not
involve the person as an active participant, but still
affects him/her. This includes decisions that have
bearing on the person, but in which he/she has no
participation in the decision-making process. An
example would be a child being affected by a
parent receiving a promotion at work or losing their
job.
Macrosystem

Cultural environment in which the child lives in and all

the systems that affect him/ her.
Examples would be economy, cultural values & political
system.
Can have either positive or negative effects on a child’s
development
Consider the differences of a child growing up in a third
world country and USA.
Or a child who has a father working in the military.
Chronosystem

 Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory is

an attempt to explain how children grow and
develop. It is made up of steadily larger groups of
influence, ultimately culminating with all the
experiences of a child's entire lifetime. At the
smallest, closest level is the microsystem.
A child lies in the middle of the image. Each circle
that surrounds the child is a different layer or
environmental system that affects the child's
growth and development.

The microsystem is depicted by the green circle.

It's where the immediate interactions of the child
take place. The microsystem includes both family
and peers.
The mesosystem is depicted by the circle. It
contains the interactions between two
microsystems. Having your friends (or your peer
microsystem) attend a family gathering (your
family microsystem) is an example of a
mesosystem.

The blue circle is the exosystem. It contains the

environmental settings in which the child is not
actively involved but that nonetheless have a
significant influence on the child.
 An example of an exosystem would
be if the child's father was laid off
from work.

 The macrosystem, which is the larger

cultural context, is represented by
the purple circle. It includes the
political beliefs of the child's culture.
LEV VYGOTSKY SOSIOCULTURAL THEORY OF DEVELOPMENT

 Vygotsky believed everything is learned on two levels. First,

through interaction with others, and then integrated into the
individual's mental structure. A second aspect ofVygotsky's
theory is the idea that the potential for
cognitive development is limited to a "zone of
proximal development" (ZPD).
