Computer Generations

The document summarizes the five generations of computers from 1940 to present. The first generation used vacuum tubes from 1946-1959 and had high energy requirements. The second generation used transistors from 1956-1964, making computers faster and more efficient. The third generation from 1965-1971 used integrated circuits for more processing power and fewer calculation mistakes. The fourth generation from 1972-1980 used VLSI microprocessors, enabling portable computers that produced less heat. The fifth generation since 1980 continues developing computers that can think for themselves with less human interference.

Introduction
 There are 5 generations of computers and each is characterized by the
technological developments of their time.
 Each generation has an approximate time period.
 The first generation was in 1940 and it has kept on advancing to this day.

First Generation computers thrived between 1946-1959. These are also

referred to as vacuum tube computers.

First Generation Main features of these are:

Vacuum Tubes – for transmitting data
Huge Energy Requirements – on average 150 kilowatts.
Second
Generation
Second Generation computers
were developed between 1956 -
1964. These computers were
transistor based.

Main features of these

computers are:
Transistors instead of
vacuum tubes
Much faster and more
energy efficient
Third Generation

Third generation computers were made in 1965 - 1971. These are

Integrated circuit based.

Main benefits of upgrading from transistors are:

 More processing power
 Less mistakes are made during calculations
Fourth Generation

Developed from 1972 - 1980 are the fourth-generation computers.

This generation is based off VLSI microprocessor.
The VLSI processor gave computers the ability to:
Be portable
Produce less heat
The fifth-generation computers have been in development since 1980
and are still being developed since.

Fifth Generation Being the most advanced computers currently, they can:
 think for themselves with a level of human interference
