SEQUENCES AND

SERIES
LECTURE 1 OF 2
LEARNING OUTCOMES
• At the end of the lesson, students should be able to

• a) write nth term of simple sequences and

series.
• b) find the nth term of arithmetic sequence and
series, Tn = a + (n −1)d and use the formula of
Sn = n [2a + (n −1)d] or
2 S n = n (a + l)
2
a) Write nth term of simple sequences
and series

A sequence is a set of numbers arranged

in a particular order.
For example, 3, 6, 9, 12, …

Each number in a sequence is called a

term.

For the above example, 3 is the first term,

6 is second term and so on.
A finite sequence has a fixed number of
terms. For example, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15. 🡨

An infinite sequence has an infinite

number of terms.
For example, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15,…🡨
Example 1
Find the first four terms of the sequence
whose nth term is
given by Tn = 5n + 6 .

Tips: n – the number of term in the sequences.

This question ask you to find the 1st , 2nd

, 3rd and 4th term.
Solution
Tn = 5n +6

T1= 5(1)+ 6 =11

T2= 5(2) + 6 =16

T3 = 5(3) + 6 = 21

T4 = 5(4) + 6 =26

The first four terms are 11, 16, 21,

26
Example 2
Find the nth term for each of the
following sequences.
a) 2, 4, 6, 8,...
b) 3, 5, 7, 9,...

c)
Solution a =2
d= 4-2 = 2

a) 2, 4, 6,8,... T = a +(n −1)d

n

Tn = 2+(n −1)2
Tn=2n Tn = 2+2n-2

b) 3, 5, 7, 9,... a =3
d= 5-3 = 2
Tn = 2n +1 Tn = a + (n −1)d
Tn = 3+ (n −1)2
Tn = 3+2n-2

c)
a =1/2
  d= (1) -1/2= 1/2
T Tn = 1/2 +(n −1) 1/2
n=
Tn = 1/2 +(n −1) 1/2
Tn = 1/2 +(1/2 )n- 1/2
EXERCISE!!

State the first term a , the common difference d,

and hence the common term (Tn).

a) -20,-10,0,10,20…. nth term

b) 3,5,7,9 …. nth term
b) Find the nth term of arithmetic
sequence and series and use the sum
formula

An arithmetic sequence (progression) is a

sequence of numbers in which any term may
be obtained from the previous term by
adding a certain number, called the
common difference.

Generally, the terms of an arithmetic

sequence are given by a, a + d, a + 2d, a
+3d,... where
a is the first term while d is common different
The nth term of an arithmetic sequence
is
Tn= a + (n −1)d

The sum of the first n terms of an

arithmetic sequence is

Sn = 2n [2a +(n −1)d]

or Sn = n (a +l)
2

where l is the last term.

Example 4
Find the nth term of the arithmetic
sequence
13,10, 7, 4,...
Solution
13, 10, 7, 4,...
a =13
d =10 −13 = −3
Tn = a + (n −1)d
Tn =13+(n −1)(−3)
=13− 3n + 3
=16 − 3n
Example
5
Find the number of terms in the
arithmetic sequence 4, 7, 10, 13,...,94 .

Mathematic 1
Solutio
n
4, 7, 10, 13,...,94
a=4
d=7−4=3
Tn = a + (n −1)d
94 = 4 +(n −1)(3)
90 = 3(n−1)
30 = n −1
n = 31

Mathematic 1
Example 6
The 12th term of an arithmetic sequence
is 38 and 17th term is 53. Find the 39th
term.

Mathematic 1
Solution
T12 = 38 Tn= a + (n −1)d

a +11d = 38 (1)

T17 = 53
a +16d =53 (2)
(2) −(1):

5d = 15
d=3

Mathematic 1
(1): a +11(3) =38
a + 33 = 38
a=5

T39 = a +38d
= 5 + 38(3)
= 119

Mathematic 1
Example 7
Find the sum of the first 30 odd
numbers.

Mathematic 1
Solution
S30 = 1+ 3 + 5 + ... + T30

a =1
d = 3 −1 = 2
n = 30

Sn = 2n [2a + (n −1)d]

S30 = 30 [2(1) + (30 −1)(2)]

2
= 900

Mathematic 1
Example 8
Find the sum of the arithmetic
sequence
2, 5, 8, 11, ..., 134 .

Mathematic 1
Solution
2, 5, 8, 11, ...,
134
a=2
d = 5 − 2 =3
Tn= a + (n −1)d
134 = 2 + (n −1)(3)
132 = 3(n−1)
44 = n −1
n = 45

Mathematic 1
n
S = n (2+l)
