BASIC ELEMENTS OF

GRAMMAR

• The words in the English Language can be designated to one of
the eight categories, known as the Part of Speech. NOUN,
PRONOUN, VERB, ADJECTIVE, ADVERB, PREPOSITION,
CONJUNCTION, INTERJECTION
• The meaning and the way the words are used in a sentence
determine what part of speech it is.
• These parts of Speech are considered as one of the basic elements
of grammar.
• Each of the part functions in accordance with the standard rules
of grammar.
•NOUNS and Pronouns
*Nouns – are the labels or names given to the people, places, and things about which
human beings communicate. It is the largest of the parts of speech categories constitute
nouns.
Examples: BOOK, PEN, TABLE, GARDEN, LONDON, STEVE, MARY etc.
Steve lives in London.
Steve is the name of Person
London is the name of Place

*Pronouns – on the other hand, are word used in replacement of nouns.


Examples; I, you, it, we, us, them, those
Mary is tired. She wants to sleep.
The subject pronoun She replaces Mary
*There are kinds of Nouns: Abstract nouns, Compound nouns, Proper nouns, Concrete
nouns, Common nouns, Collective nouns, etc.
*Abstract Nouns- name something that is non-physical that one cannot readily perceive
through any of five senses.
Examples: Nationalism, terrorism, delinquency, morality, love, credibility, etc.
A Policeman’s credibility and morality is in question if he is involved in illegal activities

*Concrete Nouns- name something that can physically see, touch, taste, hear, or smell
Examples: Criminal police officer, jail courtroom, patrol car, gun, dead body, police station
The gun used by the criminal is in the police station.
*Proper Nouns- name of a specific person, place, or thing. Should always be
capitalized.
Examples: Crimgst, Steven, College of Criminology, Philippine National Police, Lapu-
Lapu City Police Station
Criminologist, Paulino Pioquinto is the Chairperson of UCLM College of
Criminology.

*Common Nouns- any one of a class of people, places, or things


Examples: victim, cop, explosives, station, district, evidence
The victims of the explosion were assisted by the cop.
*Compound Nouns- composed of two or more words acting as a single unit.
Examples: Fingerprint, shot gun, police officer in-charge, Director General
The Director General ordered the police officer in-charge of the case to submit a written
report about the incident.

*Collective Nouns- name a group of people or things, its meaning may be either
singular or plural depending on how it is used in the sentence
Examples: council, delegation, jury, team, committee, troop, entourage
The biggest delegation of police officers came from Cebu City.
